Round 6 of the 2015 ITM Cup is brought to a close on Sunday at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, with a between top and third in the Premiership table, the 100% Tasman Makos, and the youthful and improving Auckland Seagulls. The teams have met only five times since the formation of the Tasman Union, with Auckland winning three times, with one other game, in Auckland last year ending in a 16-16 draw.
Since losing their long unbeaten record at Eden Park to their great rivals from Canterbury, the Seagulls have won three successive matches, racking up 130 points in the process, as they have climbed into third position, looking a sure bet to make the post season play-offs. If they can become the first side to lower the Tasman Makos colours this season, they may yet have a chance of a top two finish, and a home semi-final.
However, the Makos continue their hunt for the title that so cruelly eluded them in last season’s Grand Final against Taranaki, with six try-scoring bonus point wins to their credit, and a six point lead over second placed Canterbury. Sunday may prove a tight contest, but the Makos have the extra experience that might just be enough to see them scrap a seventh consecutive win.
