Newly promoted Tasman's star continues to rise with each passing week in the ITM Cup Premiership.

The next team to try and burst their bubble, following a start that has seen them wins twice and drawn one of their first three fixtures, will be Waikato, who visit Trafalgar Park, Nelson on Friday evening.

The third place Makos are one of only two unbeaten sides, along with defending champions Canterbury after three Rounds of the 2014 Premiership tournament.

Last weekend they traveled to Eden Park, and despite coming away with a 16-16 draw, they will be disappointed not to have notched another victory. There were many pundits who thought that Tasman's first game against Premiership opposition this season, would expose them as a side that would struggle with the greater intensity required in the top tier.

However, they repelled Auckland's best attempts to impose their forward power on the game, and showed that they are more than capable of competing with the big boys.

Last weekend saw Waikato secure a second win of the season, with a narrow 22-16 victory over North Harbour in wet conditions at QBE Stadium. It was the Mooloos first win since they beat Wellington in Round 1, and defeat on Friday would see a distinctive gap open up between the visitors and the top three in the table.

Tasman Makos will be looking for a more convincing performance in their home match against Waikato, than they produced in their last match, in which they defeated Northland in Whangarei.

Although the ITM Cup Championship division favorites come into the game on the back of another victory, their 28-13 against the team in bottom place came on the back of penalties from the boot of Marty Banks penalties and a late breakaway try.

Another such lack lustre display, and sub-standard performance by the forwards, will see the Makos come undone against a Waikato outfit that pushed unbeaten Wellington all the way in Hamilton.

Waikato may have been expected to roll over in front of the Wellington juggernaut, but instead, it was left to stout defense from the visitors, that allowed them to sneak away from Hamilton with the victory by 19-14.

It has to be doubted that Tasman would have the same organizational defensive abilities to repel a similar onslaught in the upcoming game, though in truth, Wellington do lack that extra guile that is needed to unlock the best defenses.

Tasman, therefore, needs to get onto the front foot, and look for their attack to conjure up a victory, rather than rely on a defensive effort.
