By the time that the Wellington Lions and the Manawatu Turbos take the pitch at the Westpac Stadium on Saturday, for their final match of the 2015 ITM Cup regular season, they will both know exactly what they have to do, if anything, to achieve their goal going into the final week of the season.

The Wellington Lions trail Hawke's Bay by three points at the top of the Championship table, as they seek the prized top position that grants home advantage through the post-season. Meanwhile, the Turbos sit at the foot of the Premiership table, two points adrift of Waikato. Amazingly, Hawke's Bat host Waikato in Napier on Friday. The outcome of which will leave wither the Lions or the Turbos with all to play for on Saturday, while the other side will have nothing but pride at stake.

The Lions have been going nip and tuck at the head of the Championship table with Hawke's Bay all season, the two side drawing a classic encounter 22-22in Round 8. The Turbos two wins this season have both been at home, and have come against the bottom two sides in the Championship, which isn't the sort of record that brings much in the way of reward. It would be no great surprise if they both won in Round 9, keeping the status quo in both divisions.

The meeting at the Westpac Stadium on Friday between hosts Wellington and Manawatu on Friday hardly looks like a fixture to set the pulses racing and we are only in week 3 of this seasons ITM Cup. Round 2 saw Wellington slip to a shock and humiliating defeat to championship side Northland in Whangarei, by the stunning scoreline of 35-5. In the meantime, their second loss of the season.

Manawatu went down to a disappointing defeat to Auckland by 35-7, when they had high hopes of beating the Premiership team, who went into last weekend's contest on the back of a humbling loss to their great rivals from Canterbury. Wellington will not be happy that they are not only the one Premiership side without a win after just two rounds of this season's tournament, but have still to register a single point, after successive losses to Waikato and Northland. If they want to retain realistic hopes of making any sort of challenge for silverware this season, they need to cut out the unforced errors, improve their defensive patterns and find some more attacking punch.

With confidence low, the visitors may think that this is a good opportunity defeat the hosts for the first time since 2011, especially as they have already beaten Northland in Round 1, who last week thrashed Wellington.
