Friday at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington promises to be one of the games of the 2015 season so far, when the Wellington Lions, second in the ITM Cup Championship, but with a 100% winning record, host the Tasman Makos who currently top the Premiership ladder, and also boast a 100% winning record at the end of Week 4.

Wellington who suffered an atrocious 2014 campaign in the Premiership, when they won just a single game, and were relegated to the second tier, have been in awesome form as they seek an immediate return to the Premiership. Four wins and three try scoring bonus points, only tell half the story. The Lions have amassed 21 tries, but more astonishingly they have conceded just a solitary try, which came in their opening fixture against the reigning Champions, Taranaki.

Since then, they have pummelled North Harbour, Northland and Southland, without having their line breeched. Tasman, have recovered from the heartbreak of losing last season’s final to Taranaki, and have continued pretty much where they left off in 2014. Four wins and four try-scoring bonus points see them lead the Premiership table, although Canterbury are poised ominously just a point behind them. In Tasman’s short history, the two sides have met on only six occasions, with Tasman’s only success coming last season, when they travelled to Wellington and inflicted a 42-20 defeat on the rock bottom Lions.

Wellingtons slide from grace this season continued with their latest defeat against the runaway juggernaut Canterbury who tops the 2014 ITM Cup Premiership table. A 46-12 defeat in Christchurch helping to keep them rooted well and truly to the foot of the table.

Tasman, who were only promoted to the Premiership at the end of last season, have been the great surprise package of the 2014 season, and proved that their form is no fluke with a thumping 38-14 success in the deep South against Southland, after losing their previous game by 31-30 against Taranaki in their previous fixture, when they gave up a winning position. Sunday's result will not confirm anything with regard to the sides 2014 ITM Cup future. However, a win for the visitors will almost certainly secure them a place in the end of season play-offs. Though they will be anxious to finish above Taranaki and claim second place, in order to avoid a likely semi-final against Canterbury in Christchurch.

Defeat at the Westpac Stadium for Wellington, would not be the final nail in their Premiership coffin, but their hopes of catching Counties Manukau and avoiding dropping into the championship would be dealt a severe blow, with just four rounds of matches left to play.
