Wellington Lions play the Waikato Mooloos at the Westpac Stadium on Saturday, in a game that is vital to both sides, in their chase for glory in the 2016 ITM Cup. The Lions are second in the Championship Division, level on points with the Otago Razorbacks, but trailing them as they lost the head to head fixture between the sides in Round 2 by 21-44.

By the time the Wellington Lions take the field on Saturday, they will know if they can overhaul the Razorbacks, if at all, and exactly what they need to do to clinch top place in the table, as Otago complete their season on Friday with a trip to Palmerston North to face Manawatu. At the very worst, the Lions will finish second in the table and play at home in the semi-final. Waikato although down in sixth position in the Premiership Division, still have slim hopes of sneaking into the top four. However, they will need to pick up a bonus point victory to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages, but will also need other results to go their way, as they lost head to head fixtures with both Tasman and Counties who are their nearest rivals.

Wellington and Waikato get their 2014 ITM Cup campaign under way at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday. Both sides will look to improve on their performance from last season, though in the case of Wellington, they don't have to look for the same significant improvement that Saturday's opponents are searching for. 2013 saw Wellington produce a strong challenge for the silverware, finishing at the top of the table by the end of the regular season. Having won nine of their 10 fixtures, and conceded the fewest number of tries, a mere 16, during that stage of the tournament. A thumping win in the semi-final against Counties Manukau, set up a home game against Canterbury, with the title at stake. Unfortunately for the home team, the visitors made their experience of the big occasion count, and a try count of 4-1 left Wellington with thoughts of what might have been.

Waikato finished in fifth position, missing out on the knockout stages last year. A poor return of four wins and six defeats meant that they never mounted a real challenge for a semi-final spot. With a defense that leaked 36 tries in 10 matches, it is quite apparent where they need to make the most significant improvement.
