Brisbane City, who have won both previous editions of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship, face the Sydney Rays at Ballymore on Sunday, knowing that defeat will end their title reign. Even victory against the Rays will leave Brisbane clinging to hopes of a play-off place, that are as dependant on results elsewhere going their way in the next three weeks, as much as their own form. Brisbane City have lost three of their four fixtures this season, which is more than they have lost in the previous two seasons combined.

The one solitary success, came against the Rams at home in Round 2. The four points that they took from that outing, being all that they have managed to register so far this season. As a result, they are in sixth position, way back off the pace for a play-off spot, eight points adrift of fourth positioned Perth Spirit. The North Harbour Rays are in third place, with three wins and 14 points to their credit. They have however, only been on the road once to date, when they defeated winless and bottom of the table Queensland Country by 30-22. The Rays solitary defeat this season, came last week, when they lost to top of the table Eagles 16-36.

Last season, Brisbane City made the post-season play-offs in the National Rugby Championship (NRC) only after finishing in third position on the ladder, trailing a massive 14 points behind table toppers the Melbourne Rising. Of course, history shows that City went on to beat the New South Wales Country Eagles in the semi-final by 32-26, before beating surprise finalists the Perth Spirit in the Grand Final at Ballymore Stadium by 37-26.

On Thursday the Champions will host the North Harbour Rays at Ballymore, the scene of their Championship win. They go into the game as the 2015 table leaders after three rounds of competition, with a 100% winning record, and look set to challenge for top spot through until the end of the regular season. The two sides immediately behind them, the Sydney Stars and University of Canberra Vikings. Also have 100% winning records at this stage. City will be keen to apply the pressure on their rivals by securing the points in the first game of Round 4. The Rays who were crushed at the Brookvale Oval last season in Round 8 by City, the final score being 26-77, are in fifth position, but have managed just a solitary win in 2015.
