The 2015 National Rugby Championship (NRC) begins on Thursday, with a re-run of last seasons Grand Final, at Ballymore in Brisbane, between the reigning Champions, the Brisbane City, against Perth Spirit. When the teams met in Round 2 of the 2014 regular season at the McGillivray Oval in Perth, Brisbane took the victory with a 26-21 success, outscoring their hosts by 4-3 tries. Perth recording a losing bonus point for their efforts.

Although they went on to capture the inaugural title, Brisbane only finished third in the regular season table, winning six of their eight fixtures. Going on to beat the side who pipped them to second position on the ladder, NSW Country Eagles by 32-26 in the semi-finals

Perth Spirit meanwhile, had only scraped through to the semi-final play-off thanks to a losing bonus point in the final round of games. Despite only three wind during the regular season, they found themselves in the knockout phase of the tournament. They were given little chance against Melbourne Rising, who had completely dominated the regular season, and boasted of a 100% winning record. However, the performance of the season, saw them score six tries, as they progressed to the final with a 45-29 win. Perth Spirit couldn't repeat their heroics in the final and went down 26-37, in front of nearly at 8,000 spectators at Ballymore.

The inaugural Grand Final of the National Rugby Championship will take place at Ballymore on Saturday, and will be between Brisbane City and Perth Spirit. The two finalists were both underdogs going into their semi-finals last weekend, but ultimately both deserved their places in the final, with the displays that they gave when it really mattered. Brisbane City had to stage a fightback to clinch their semi-final win, a 32-26 victory over NSW Country Eagles at Central Coast Stadium. While The Spirit caused a mighty shock by beating the undefeated Melbourne Rising 45-29 at AAMI Park.

Brisbane finished in third position on the regular season table, having won six and lost two of their qualifying fixtures, Although they will be without star players James Horwill, Will Genia and Quade Cooper and James Hanson, who are all required for the Wallabies' end-of-season tour, they will still start the final as favourites. Perth Spirit only just scraped into fourth spot with a 3 win and 5 loss record, but their ability to secure losing bonus points was crucial as they pipped Greater Sydney Rams by a single point for the play-off spot.

They are now on a three game winning streak, having won their final two round robin games, before springing the upset of the season against red-hot title favourites the Rising. They will also be without a number of Wallabies; Kyle Godwin, Ben McCalman and Matt Hodgson.
