Last season, Brisbane were even more impressive in defending their title. Eight wins in eight outings, including a 61-29 victory over the NSW Country Eagles at Ballymore, saw them take top seeding for the knockout phase. They subsequently beat the Sydney Stars 47-32 in the last four, and the Vikings 21-10 in the Grand Final.

The first semi-final of the inaugural National Rugby Championship, takes place at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford on Friday, with New South Wales Country Eagles playing host to their rivals from Queensland. Brisbane City. The two sides had similar records during the qualifying stages, and this promises to be a tight affair. In the qualifying group, both teams won six out of their eight matches, but NSW Country Eagles secured the home advantage for the semi-final courtesy of a single extra bonus point. When the teams clashed in Round 4 of the regular season at Oakes Oval, Lismore, the visitors from Brisbane City emerged victorious. A brutal encounter, in which the Country XV seemed to struggle to contain their frustration through their first defeat of the season, finished 34-26 to Brisbane, who outscored their hosts by 5 tries to 3.

On that day, the Country's scrum creaked badly, and they will need to perform better in that area to achieve parity, if they are to turn that result around, and make it to the grand Final. The winners of Friday's first semi-final will meet the winner of the other semi-final, being played the following day between Melbourne Rising and Perth Spirit.
