The 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) reaches its climax on Saturday, when the Grand Final takes place between the New South Wales Country Eagles and the Perth Spirit at the Chillingworth Oval in Tamworth. The Eagles will go into the match as the overwhelming favourites to claim the title, won for the last two seasons by the Brisbane City. A record of six wins and just one loss during the regular season, saw the Eagles finish at the top of the ladder and secure top seeding for the knockout phase. The one blip on their record was a shock 38-40 defeat at Queensland Country (QLD) in Round 6, a result that proved to be QLD's only victory of the season.

Perth had to battle their way through to the Grand Final the hard way, via an away semi-final at the Sydney Rays, who had finished one place above them in the final table. The Perth Spirit themselves finished in third spot with five wins and two defeats, the losses coming at the Rays and the Eagles. The regular season meeting between Saturday's finalists took place in Round 5, and ended 48-24 to the Eagles. While the score line may be closer, the result looks likely to be the same in Tamworth.

The New South Wales Country Eagles are at home to Perth Spirit in the first game in Round 5 of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship on Saturday. The fixture was scheduled to be played at the Endeavour Oval in Orange. However, an inordinate amount of rainfall, has caused the game to be transferred to the Concorde Oval in Sydney, and will be played a s part of a double header with the Western Sydney Rams against Queensland Country following on. The Eagles thoroughly deserve their place at the top of the table, with four wins out of four, giving them a three point advantage over the Canberra Vikings.

After Saturday, the Eagles will finish the regular season with fixtures against the bottom two sides, who ahead of Round 5 are both winless in 2016. Victory on Saturday should all but secure top spot, and home advantage through the post-season play-offs. Perth Spirit currently occupy the fourth and final play-off position, with three wins and twelve points to their credit. They have just a two point advantage over Melbourne Rising, who they defeated 20-16 in the opening round of the season. With matches still to come against Brisbane and Canberra, the Spirit are going to need to be at their best, if they are to cling onto a play-off place. It will however, be a surprise if they leave Sydney with anything more than a losing bonus point at best.
