Benetton Treviso, winless and pointless in this season's RaboDirect PRO12 tournament after three rounds, will once more attempt to break their duck on both counts, when they host the Newport Gwent Dragons at the Stadio Monigo on Friday. The Italian side who sit at the foot of the PRO12 table at the end of Round 3, last enjoyed a win in the competition in Round 21 of last season, when they overcame the eventual Champions Connacht by just 22-21. For a side with such a poor record over the past year, it is surprising to realise that they have scored at least one try in every game that they have played since last November.

The Newport Gwent Dragons own record is little better then Treviso's, with just a solitary victory to their credit since last January. A narrow 11-6 home win against another Italian side, Zebre, at Rodney Parade on 9th September. The last time that they managed a win away from home in the PRO12, was at Benetton Treviso back in March of 2015. That win was one of only two that the Dragons have managed at the Stadio Monigo, the other occasion being in a European Champions Cup tie in December 2007. Overall the sides have played on 12 previous occasions in the PRO12, with six wins apiece.

With the 6-Nations Tournament having a break this weekend, attention switches solidly to the domestic competitions around Europe. However, there will be little to set the pulses racing in anticipation of the match on Friday night at the Stadio Monigo, where Benetton Treviso will be hosting the Newport Gwent Dragons in the Guinness PRO12. Treviso finally claimed a first win of the season, in any tournament, when last weekend they defeated the Cardiff Blues by 13-7 at their Stadio Monigo home. That victory in which they scored a solitary try for the sixth successive game, still leaves the Italians at the foot of the PRO12 table, seven points adrift of their fellow countrymen from Zebre, and eleven points behind their visitors on Friday, who are currently in tenth position. The Dragons have yet to win away from home in this season's PRO12, one of the reasons for their lowly position in the table. Their hosts being the only other side in the competition who are also waiting to taste success on the road.

Recent meetings between the two teams, has seen the Welsh Region with the upper hand, having lost just one of the previous six clashes, when Treviso won an end of season contest in April 2014 by 45-27 in Italy.

There is plenty at stake for the home side on Saturday at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo, when Benetton Treviso host the Newport Gwent Dragons in Round 18 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Treviso may be bottom but one of the table, but vital for them is that the team below them is the other Italian side, Parma based Zebre. The highest finisher in the table at the end of the regular season will gain the prize of a place in next season's Champions Cup. If Treviso defeat the Dragons on Saturday, it will be the first time that they will have beaten Welsh Regions in three successive matches since 1998. It will however, be just Treviso's second win in their last six PRO12 matches. a 40-24 home success against the Cardiff Blues being the only other win in that time. The Dragons are in tenth position, and have had a desperately disappointing PRO12 campaign, and are out of the running for a place in next season's Champions Cup.

However, they have a Challenge Cup quarter-final against the Blues on Saturday week to look forward to, and may have set their priorities elsewhere than the Stadio Monigo. The Dragons may have to wait a bit later for a second ever win at the Stadio Monigo, to go with their solitary success back in 2007, when they squeezed home 35-33 in an European Cup match.

At first glance, Saturday's RaboDirect PRO12 fixture between the Italians of Benetton Treviso and the Welshmen of Newport Gwent Dragons wouldn't appear to have any relevance to the rest of the season's competition. In truth, it doesn't have any real bearing on the PRO12, but for Benetton Treviso it is a vital match, as they strive to finish as the leading Italian side in the table, so as to clinch qualification for next season's European Cup. Although they currently sit eleventh out of the twelve sides in the competition, Benetton Treviso is four points ahead of their national rivals from Parma, Zebre. As long as they finish above Zebre, they will secure the one automatic place on offer to Italian sides in next season's senior European competition.

The Dragons are in ninth position, and although with a good run of results to the end of the season, they could climb a couple of places in the table, they are too far adrift of the Scarlets, to have a realistic chance of making it into the European Cup themselves. The Dragons drew on their last visit to Italy at the end of March when they traveled to Zebre, and shared the points in a 25-25 draw.

The Dragons are in the spot right above the worst team of the year, Zebre. The Newport Gwent Dragons have at least won something however, with three games out of nine a win. They have 13 points right now while Zebre has four points and no wins.
