Benetton Treviso                          Glasgow
Saturday 31st December 13:05 GMT

Benetton Treviso will hope to use the momentum of three successive victories to help propel them to their best result of the season, when they face the Glasgow Warriors at the Stadio Comunale Di Monigo in Treviso on Saturday, in Round 12 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Until three weeks ago, Benetton Treviso had managed just a single victory in all tournaments during the 2016/17 season, a 27-11 home win against the Newport Gwent Dragons in Round 4 of the PRO12, and were bottom of the table, as well as propping up their Challenge Cup Pool.

However, they recorded back to back wins in the Challenge Cup against Bayonne of the French Top 14, before last weekend they overcame Zebre in the Italian PRO12 derby by 23-11 on home soil. A result that lifted them off of the foot of the PRO12 table and above their rivals. They now have a two point advantage over Zebre, although they have played two games more. The Warriors, like their hosts on Saturday, have won their last three outings in all competitions. Recording stunning back to back wins against the French Champions Racing 92 in the Champions Cup, before beating Scottish rivals Edinburgh 25-12 in the Scottish capital last weekend in the PRO12. That success against Edinburgh ended a run of three successive losses in the PRO12, a sequence of results that saw the Glasgow Warriors slip down the table, where they now reside in sixth position with 31 points, just a single point behind Ulster and the Scarlets, the two sides immediately above them in the standings.

There will be plenty at stake in the Stadio Monigo on Saturday, when Benetton Treviso host the reigning Guinness PRO12 Champions in Round 19 of this season's tournament. The Italians may sit at the foot of the table, three points adrift of their fellow countrymen from Zebre, but they can still qualify for next season's Champions Cup by overhauling their Parma based rivals. The highest finishing Italian team in the table, securing the nation's guaranteed place in the competition. Five successive PRO12 victories has seen the Warriors rise to sixth position, just a solitary point behind Munster who are holding the final play-off spot. The Champions last tasted defeat in Belfast in Round 14, when they were narrowly beaten by Ulster.

If the Scots make it six wins on the bounce, they will record back to back away wins in the RaboDirect PRO12 for the first time since October 2014, having won their last trip on the road, at Rodney Parade against the Newport Gwent Dragons. The Italian outfit haven't beaten the Glasgow Warriors since they claimed a 15-13 victory at Firhill in September 2011, since when the sides have met on eight occasions, all of which have ended in a Warriors success.

Following last week's unexpected victory by Zebre in Parma against Ulster, fellow Italians Benetton Treviso now find themselves at the very bottom of the Guinness PRO12 table after four rounds of matches, without a single point to their credit. Last week's thumping at the Newport Gwent Dragons, was the seventh straight defeat in the PRO12 for Benetton Treviso, their last success coming back on on 12th April, when by coincidence they defeated the Dragons at home. Should the high flying Glasgow Warriors who are the visitors to the Stadio Monigo on Sunday, inflict another defeat on the Italians, then it will be the first time that Treviso have suffered three successive home defeats in the PRO12 since April 2012. Last season's beaten Grand Finalists, Glasgow Warriors, are right behind the early leaders the Ospreys, with both sides having perfect 100% winning records from their first four fixtures.

The only defeat that the Warriors have tasted in the PRO12 since early March, came in last season's Grand Final at the RDS against the reigning champions Leinster. The Warriors have won their last 11 matches against Italian opponents. Treviso being the last team to beat them, by 15-13 at Firhill in September 2011, one of only two occasions that they have registered a win against the Scottish side in the PRO12.

There were arguments both for and against changes to the qualification process to next seasons European Cup. However, one thing for certain, is that the changes that have been introduced have guaranteed a much more exciting finish to the campaign in the PRO12 tournament. Benetton Treviso faces Glasgow Warriors on Friday night, in what is a huge contest for both sides. The home sides are chasing a place in next season’s premier European competition, while the Scots from Glasgow, and are looking to secure a home play-off match. The Italians need to finish above their fellow countrymen from Zebre if they wish to qualify for the European Cup, and with two matches left, they hold a slender four point advantage.

Glasgow is currently second in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, but holds just a one point advantage over Munster, with Ulster poised just four points behind them. The Scottish outfit is the form side at the moment, having won six PRO12 games on the bounce, and accumulated 26 league points during that run. They will hope to extend their winning run against Italian opposition to ten games on Friday, at Stadio Comunale Di Monigo having not lost to opponents from that country since Treviso were victorious at Firhill in September 2011.
