Cardiff Blues                          Benetton Treviso
Saturday 18th February 14:30 GMT

The Cardiff Blues are just about clinging onto a slim hope of climbing back into the top six of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, a necessity to qualify for next season's Champions Cup. On Saturday afternoon the Blues will play host to Benetton Treviso from Italy in Round 15 of the tournament, going into the weekend's fixtures in seventh position, but 10 points behind Ulster, who also have a game in hand. The Blues were beaten at the Arms Park last weekend by reigning Champions Connacht by 13-19, a fifth defeat in the last six Pro12 fixtures that the Welsh Region have played. The one victory during that sequence coming in their local derby against the Newport Gwent Dragons on Boxing Day.

When the Blues travelled to Treviso earlier in the season, they were triumphant in a thrilling encounter by 34-28. Treviso are in eleventh position, just two points above bottom side Zebre, their fellow countrymen from Parma. Benetton Treviso have managed just two wins in the Pro12 this season, both of which came at home, the last one being against Zebre in Round 11. Only twice in away games in the competition this season, have the Italians conceded less than 31 points.

With five games of the RaboDirect PRO12 regular season remaining, the Cardiff Blues campaign already looks done and dusted, as they sit in ninth position in the table, a full eight points outside of a qualification position for the Champions Cup in 2016/17. For the visitors to the Arms Park on Friday, Benetton Treviso however, their season is still very much on the line. They may be at the foot of the PRO12 table, but with the Italian team that finishes highest in the table qualifying for next season's Champions Cup, their campaign is still alive.

Treviso target going into the last feww weeks of the season, after a woeful season, is to overhaul Parma based Zebre, who have just a three point advantage, although they do have a game in hand. Although the Cardiff Blues have managed only a single victory against Benetton Treviso in the last four clashes, a 36-25 success at the Arms Park in last season's PRO12 tournament, they have never been beaten at home by Friday's visitors. The only time that they have slipped up on home soil to an Italian side, was back in September 2013, when Zebre took the points courtesy of a 30-25 victory.

The prospect of the Guinness Pro12 match at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday evening between the Cardiff Blues and Benetton Treviso is hardly likely to set the pulses racing of even the most staunch supporters of either side. Both teams have been desperately disappointing over the first eight weeks of this season's tournament, with the Blues occupying ninth spot on the table, while Treviso are currently rock bottom of the pile. After beating another Italian side, Zebre, on their own ground in Parma, on the opening weekend of the PRO12, the Cardiff Blues have now gone seven games in the competition without a win The Blues own supporters have not seen them win at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park in the PRO12 since way back in March. when they defeated Ulster.

The visitors to Cardiff on Friday evening did at least end a 12 match losing streak in all competitions last weekend, when they secured a surprise draw with the reigning RaboDirect PRO12 title holders, Leinster, 24-all in Treviso. Their last win was against another Welsh Region, Newport Gwent Dragons, who they beat in Treviso back in mid-April. Although the last three fixtures between these two sides, have seen a win each and a draw, The Blues have won all four encounters the two teams have had in Cardiff, and the Italians have to go back nearly 18 months for their last win in Wales, when they defeated the Scarlets on 3rd May 2013.

The Cardiff Blues will be hoping to avoid another slip up at the Arms Park against Italian opposition, when they face off with Benetton Treviso on Saturday, having lost their previous match at home in the RaboDirect PRO12 to Zebre earlier in this season's tournament. Each of the Blues last five matches in all competitions have been won the side playing at home on the day, while that surprising 25-30 defeat to Zebre in round 3, which was the first game that the Italians have won in the competition since their entry last season, was the Blues only defeat at the Arms Park since February. Benetton Treviso's recent record is identical to Cardiff's, in that their last five games have also been won by the home side on the day. The only time that the Italian have managed to win outside of their own country since April 2012, came in Wales, when they defeated the Scarlets in round 22 of last season.
