Friday 4th December 19:05 GMT

Following their Welsh derby defeat in Swansea last weekend against the Ospreys, Cardiff have now suffered seven straight defeats in the Guinness PRO12 tournament, since their opening day success against the Italians of Zebre, when they scored 11 tries and won by 61-13. The worst run in the side's history. The Blues welcome the table topping Irishmen of Connacht to The Arms Park on Friday evening, as they seek to bring that woeful run to an end. A sequence of results that has seen them plummet to tenth position in the PRO12 table, with only the two Italians participants below them.

Connacht, whose only defeat in any tournament this season, came in Round 2 of the RaboDirect PRO12, when they were defeated by reigning Champions the Glasgow Warriors by a solitary point, are the top try scorers in the competition, having crossed their opponents line 25 times. Amazingly, Cardiff are the second highest scorers with 23 tries, although that was boosted of course by the 11 against Zebre.

The two teams have already met once this season, having clashed in Galway back in Round3, when they Irishmen won something of a thriller by 36-31. If they are successful on Friday Evening, it will be their first ever season double against the Blues. Cardiff Blues have slipped to seven straight defeats in the Guinness PRO12, their worst run in the history of the tournament, although they have at least picked up four losing and one try bonus point along the way.

Connacht's thumping 50 point victory in Galway last weekend, helped them to open a six point gap between themselves and the Scarlets in the chase for the final automatic qualifying position for next season's Champions Cup.

On Friday night they visit the Welsh capital to take on the Cardiff Blues in Round 17 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, looking to claim a third straight PRO12 victory, and to help consolidate their position in the chase for the European qualifying place. Should they add to their wins against Treviso and the Newport Gwent Dragons, it will be only the second time that the Irish Province have beaten the Blues in their last 11 meetings.

Although the Blues managed a win at home to Edinburgh in the previous round, it was the first success after three consecutive losses, and they have yet to record a PRO12 win against an Irish team this season. The last time that they managed to beat a team from across the Irish Sea, was when they defeated Connacht in Galway last May. Connacht's last trip to the principality saw them beat the Dragons 30-25 at Rodney Parade, but they haven't won successive games in Wales since 2004/05.

Cardiff gave last season’s surprise packages Glasgow a real run for their money in the first round. Young fly half Rhys Patchell again showed glimpses of his promise, netting four penalties and a long range drop goal to give Cardiff a 15-12 lead in the second half. In the end, reserve back Tommy Seymour’s moment of brilliance in the 68th minute saw Glasgow take the lead against the run of play. Lloyd Williams had a late chance to cross the line for Cardiff, but was held up, and the visitors’ losing run against Glasgow was extended to five games.
