The Guinness PRO12 regular season reaches the half-way stage over the Christmas Holiday period, and sees a series of local derbies scheduled to set the fans pulses racing, even when it is two struggling clubs going head to head, as is the case at the Cardiff Arms Park on Boxing Day, when they Blues play their old rivals, the Newport Gwent Dragons. The Blues go into the game down in seventh position in the table with five wins and 22 points to their credit. Leaving them 10 points adrift of the play-off places. A disappointing scenario, given that they began the PRO12 season with four straight victories.

Since winning in Parma against Zebre in late September, the Cardiff Blues only victory in the competition was in Italy against the hapless Benetton Treviso. The Blues will be looking to end a run of three straight losses at the Arms Park in the PRO12, their last success in front of their own supporters coming against the Glasgow Warriors 23-19 in Round 3. The Dragons have managed just three wins in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season, and collected a total of just 15 points, which leaves them well adrift of the top four in the table, and are even seven points and two places adrift of the Blues. Five games on the road in the PRO12 for the Dragons have all ended in defeat. With only a Welsh derby against the Scarlets ending in a losing margin of less than 13 points.

Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons, who clash at the Cardiff Arms Park on Boxing Day, both started the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament with high hopes of making an impact in the tournament, if not winning the title. However, as Christmas arrived the Welsh Regions find themselves in lowly ninth and tenth position, with only the two Italia participants in the competition below them in the table.

However, the Cardiff Blues are in a reasonable run of form at the Arms Park at least, where they will be trying for a fourth successive win in all competitions, when they face the Dragons. The Newport Gwent Dragons themselves are unbeaten in their last three fixtures, but have a woeful recent record against other Welsh Regions, having lost on the last five occasions that they have faced their fellow countrymen. If they succeed in ending that run. they will become the first Welsh Region to defeat the Blues at the Arms Park in 2014. Given that only the top finishing Welsh Region is guaranteed entry to next season's Champions Cup, it is essential for both sides to get on a winning run and to start climbing the PRO12 table as soon as possible, of they are to retain hope of a place in the premier European club competition next season.

The Blues will need a huge turn around in form, or at least their RaboDirect PRO12 form, when they face their nearest rivals the Newport Gwent Dragons on New Year's Day at the Cardiff Arms Park, if they are to end a run that has seen them lose their last four matches in the competition, when facing other Welsh Regions.

A run that includes the first leg of this holiday season double header, when the Dragons ran out 22-16 winners at Rodney Parade on Boxing Day. That victory saw the Dragons rise two places to 6th place in the PRO12 table, while Cardiff Blues slipped to tenth, with just Connacht and Zebre below them. However, the Dragons away form is woeful, with just one victory from their last eleven games away from home in all competitions, since last February. That win came in late November, when they defeated Glasgow Warriors in the PRO 12 by 23-8. They have to go all the way back to October 2010 to find their last success against another Welsh Region away from home, when they beat the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. If the Dragons do succeed in beating the Blues on New Year's Day, then it will be their first double over their bitter rivals since the very first season of Regional rugby, a decade ago.
