Cardiff Blues                          Scarlets
Friday 28th October 18:35 GMT

Cardiff Blues meet the Scarlets in a Welsh derby in Round 7 of the Guinness PRO12 tournament on Friday, at the Arms Park. After starting the season with four straight wins in the PRO12, the Cardiff Blues have lost their last two games in the competition, losing narrowly at home to Leinster, before plunging to 24-46 loss at the Ospreys. The last two weeks have seen the sides in European competition, with the Blues recording wins against Bristol and PAU. They will hope that the return to form will help them avoid a third successive PRO12 defeat, something that they haven't suffered since November 2015.

The Scarlets began their RaboDirect PRO12 season with three losses, but have won the last three, to move up to seventh position in the table, one place and five points behind the Blues. The Blues have an outstanding record on home soil against their fellow Welsh Regions, suffering just a solitary defeat since December 2013, which came against the Dragons on Boxing Day 2014. The Scarlets haven't won on Cardiff soil since December 2012, when they sneaked home by 9-6 at the Cardiff Arms Park. If they are to end that sequence of defeats in the capital on Friday Evening, they will need to record just a second win on the road in the last six attempts. The only previous win in the last five away fixtures coming at Treviso in Italy in Round 5.

The Bank Holiday fixtures saw the Cardiff Blues and the Scarlets have completely different fortunes, with the Blues winning by a point, while the Scarlets lost their match by a solitary point. The Blues made the short journey up the road to Rodney Parade to face the Dragons, and registered just their third Guinness PRO12 win of the season, squeezing home by 21-20. They have now lost just once in the last four games in all tournaments, when they travelled to Montpellier in France and went down by 22-23. The Scarlets were beaten in another Welsh derby thriller, going down 26-27 at home to the Ospreys. Despite that defeat, the Scarlets retained top spot in the table, thanks to Ulster's win at Connacht. Prior to the Osprey's fixture, the Scarlets had been beaten twice in successive weeks by the Glasgow Warriors in the Champions Cup.

Although the Scarlets will arrive at the Srms Park with the best away record in the RaboDirect PRO12, having accumulated 13 points in their four league matches, they will be seeking a first win at the venue since December 2012. While the Blues are able to boast a home record in the PRO12 that shows just a solitary loss since last January, when the eventual Champions the Glasgow Warriors were the visitors.

After a break for the latest two rounds of European competition, the RaboDirect PRO12 returns on Friday night for the 10th Round of matches in this season's tournament. Cardiff Blues who have had a fairly forgettable season in the PRO12 up until now at least, play host to fellow Welsh Region, the Scarlets, at the Cardiff Arms Park.

The Blues are currently in ninth position in the table, just two places behind their visitors, but trailing them by 10 points. If they are to have hopes of qualifying for next season's European Champions Cup, then a win against the countrymen on Friday night is essential, with only the top Welsh side qualifying by right. The Scarlets last tasted success away from their own ground back in February, when they won in Italy against Benetton Treviso, since when they have played 10 fixtures in all competitions, and haven't registered a further win. However, the men from West Wales, who will be buoyed by last Sunday's Champions Cup victory against Ulster, have held the upper hand against the men from Cardiff in recent meetings. The Blues only victory in the last eight fixtures between the two sides, being a narrow 17-13 on "judgement Day" at the Millennium Stadium in April.

The anticipated qualification process for next season's European Cup has been confirmed, and unless the inconsistent Blues can finish the season with three wins in the PRO12, and hope that other results go their way, they will miss out on next season's top tournament. The Cardiff Blues who "host" the Scarlets at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday, have won their last two matches in the PRO12, and are seeking a third consecutive win in the competition, for the first time since November 2011.

The Scarlets have also won their last two matches in the RaboDirect Pro12, against Connacht and Zebre, and seem to have all but clinched the last European Cup place as a result, but they have lost their last three clashes with fellow Welsh Regions. Recent history would suggest that the Scarlets will confine the Blues to the second tier of European competition next season, as they have been victorious in the last eight meetings between the sides in all tournaments. The last Blues success was at Parc y Scarlets in April 2010. While the Scarlets have won on their last two visits to the Millennium Stadium, Blues have not won a match there since they defeated Toulouse in the Heineken Cup quarter-final back in April 2009.
