Cardiff Blues                          Ulster
Saturday 3rd December 17:15 GMT

Both the Cardiff Blues and Ulster, who face each other in Round 10 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament at the Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday, made storming starts to the season,, the Blues winning four straight victories, while Ulster went one better, and won their first five matches. However, since those scintillating starts to the campaign, both sides have stuttered. The Blues winning just one of the subsequent five fixtures, which was a narrow victory in Italy against bottom of the table Benetton Treviso. While Ulster have lost their last three PRO12 games, with last weekend's match against Zebre in Belfast being postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Both sides are desperate for a win on Saturday, as they seek to cling onto the short tails of the sides who currently occupy the top four positions. Cardiff Blues have 22 points from their nine matches, and are in seventh position in the table, which leaves them five points adrift of the Scarlets who hold the vital fourth place ahead of this weekend's round of fixtures. Ulster are one place and one point ahead of the Blues, but have the game in hand as the result of last week's postponement. A match that they would most certainly expect to win, and would be disappointed if they didn't also pick up a bonus point.

The Cardiff Blues have suffered back to back defeats in the Guinness PRO12, away to Treviso in Italy, and at the Arms Park against Leinster last weekend. As a result, they trail in ninth position in the table, 17 points behind Ulster, who occupy the fourth and final play-off spot. Ulster are the visitors to the Arms Park on Sunday, arriving on the back of a loss in Belfast last Sunday to the Scarlets, a result that ended the Irish Province's three game winning run in the PRO12.

The last trip that Ulster made to the principality, resulted in a 19-12 success at Rodney Parade against the Newport Gwent Dragons. They have not won successive games in Wales since the 2012/13 season. If Cardiff avoid a second defeat this campaign against the men from the North of Ireland, having lost 17-24 in Belfast in October, it will be the first time that Ulster will have suffered successive regular season losses in the RaboDirect PRO12 since December 2014. In the last seven games that they have played against opponents from across the Irish Sea, the Blues have managed just a single victory. A 20-16 win against Connacht on home soil in December.

Having started the new RaboDirect PRO12 season with an encouraging 40 point victory in Italy against Zebre the Cardiff Blues were brought back down to earth with a bump last weekend, when they were beaten at the Cardiff Arms Park by Glasgow Warriors, and conceded 30 points along the way. They have a quick opportunity to atone for that performance in front of their own fans, when Ulster visits them on Friday evenings.

This will be Ulster's second visit to Wales in the opening three rounds, having traveled to the Scarlets in Round 1, where they drew an astonishing match 32-32. However, they haven't beaten a Welsh Region since last March, when they defeated the Scarlets at Ravenhill in Belfast. The Arms Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the Ulstermen over the last decade, with just one win at the venue since September 2005, when they triumphed in September 2012, although they did win in Cardiff, when the Blues moved home to the City Stadium. Blues will be hoping that they record three consecutive wins against Irish opposition for the first time since May 2010, having beaten opponents from across the Irish Sea in their last two encounters.

Ulster have all but confirmed their place in the post season play-offs, but will be anxious to overtake at least one of their Irish rivals, Leinster or Munster, who currently occupy the top two spots in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, in order to secure a home semi-final, and with five rounds of matches remaining, they are within a victory of both sides.

Cardiff Blues have had more lows than highs this season, and are currently suffering from one of their low periods. They have lost five successive matches in the PRO12 tournament, which equals their worst ever run in the competition. Blues recent record against Irish Provinces, is not impressive. They have managed just a single win from the last nine matches they have played against sides from across the other side of the Irish Sea, which was in round 2, when they defeated Connacht by 21-10 at the Arms Park. Ulster meanwhile, are on a run that has seen them win eight successive games in all competitions, although last weekend, when they beat Edinburgh by 9-3 at Murrayfield, for only the third time in the history of the tournament, the Irish side won a match without scoring a try.

On Friday, the 17th of February, the RaboDirect PRO12 competition will pit the Cardiff Blues against Ulster in Cardiff at 19:05 local time, which is also GMT. Right now the Cardiff Blues are in sixth place in the RaboDirect table. They have played thirteen games so far, unlike all of the other rugby teams on the table, and won seven of their games, losing six with no draws. That gives the team 35 points. As for Ulster, they are in a slightly better position in fifth place with 36 points after winning eight of fourteen games and losing just six.
