Connacht                          Benetton Treviso
Saturday 3rd December 15:00 GMT

It would appear from this season's results, that the Irish Provincial minnows from Connacht, found winning the Guinness PRO12 tournament last season, a sight more easier than it is to defend the title during the current campaign. On Saturday, the Irishmen will face the Italians of Benetton Treviso at the Galway Sportsground in Galway, seeking just their fourth win of the season in the competition. All three of their victories to date have been on home soil in Galway, and that after they were beaten heavily in the first two outings at the Sportsground, by the Glasgow Warriors and the Ospreys, 5-41 and 11-32 respectively.

In total they have managed to accumulate 15 points from eight RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures, their game in Parma against Zebre was abandoned due to bad weather and a threat to the player's safety. As a result that sit in eighth position, a full 12 points behind the play-off positions. Benetton Treviso have had a terrible season on the field so far, with just a single win to their credit, and they sit at the very foot of the table going into the weekend's fixtures. The one win that they have registered was in Round 4 at home to the Newport Gwent Dragons. All five away fixtures have resulted in defeat, with the narrowest margin being the 12 points by which they lost to Leinster in Dublin in the opening round of the campaign.

Connacht will be confident of recording a sixth win from seven RaboDirect PRO12 matches this season, when they host the Italians of Benetton Treviso on Friday Evening at the Galway Sportsground in Galway. The Irish Province are currently in second place in the table, just a mere point behind table topping Scarlets, having won four successive games. If they can make it five on the trot on Friday, it will be the first time that have recorded such a successful sequence since 2002. The only reverse suffered by the side from the West of the Emerald Isle so far in the 2015/16 season, came when they visited the reigning Champions, Glasgow Warriors in Round 2, and were beaten by a solitary point back in Round 2.

Treviso haven't won a RaboDirect PRO12 match since last February, all of 13 rounds of competition ago, when the Cardiff Blues were the visitors to the Stadio Monigo. The Italians who are rock bottom of the tournament, having accumulated just four bonus points so far this campaign, have beaten Connacht just once in the last six meetings. That 23-3 win in October 2013, was also the last time that they managed to beat any Irish side.

It would not have been so long ago that a late season RaboDirect PRO12 match between Connacht and Benetton Treviso would have had little consequence for either side. However, such is the qualification process for the European Champions Cup, that Sunday's match at the Sportsground between the two takes on a huge significance. The Irish Province remain in sixth place in the table. A position that they have held since Round 7, despite winning just four and losing five matches in subsequent rounds. If they can maintain that position for just another seven rounds of competition, then the final place in the Champions Cup will be theirs.

The Italians to are searching for a coveted spot in the Premier European Club competition. They may lie in eleventh place in the table, but they just need to finish as the top Italian side, and they currently have an eight point advantage over Parma based Zebre. Although Connacht have lost their last two outings in Galway, against Edinburgh and the Exeter Chiefs, they will be facing a Treviso side that hasn't won outside their home country since May 2013, when they beat the Scarlets in Wales. To find their last success on Irish soil, they have to go back even further, to December 2011.

Thanks to the presence of the Italian side Zebre in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, the match between Connacht and Treviso at the Galway Sportsground in Galway on Saturday is not a wooden spoon play-off. There is little at stake apart from pride, however, when the two sides occupying tenth and eleventh position on the table come face to face. Connacht has at least won their last two PRO12 matches, at home against Edinburgh and away to Zebre. Victories which lifted them off of the foot of the table. A third win, against Treviso on Saturday, would be the first time in 12 months that the Irish Province had posted three successive victories. Connacht's five clashes with Italian opponents in all competitions this season, has only resulted in just a single defeat, a comprehensive 3-23 defeat to Treviso in round 5 of the PRO12, and on only one occasion, has an Italian side triumphed at the Sportsground, when Treviso themselves left with the points following a 15-13 win in the PRO12 in December 2011.

The only PRO12 success that Benetton Treviso have tasted in the PRO12 since round 5, was a 20-15 win at home to their Italian rivals Zebre, on 28th December, while they have failed to win on the road since they beat the Scarlets in Wales in round 22 last season.
