Saturday 31st December 17:30 GMT

Reigning Guinness PRO12 Champions Connacht, can not afford to let the gap between themselves and the top four sides in the table grow any larger, if they want to maintain any real hope of defending their title come the post-season play-offs. On Saturday, however, the Champions face the daunting task of taking on the current table toppers, fellow Irish Province Munster. They will have the advantage of the fixture being played at their own The Sportsground home in Galway, where they have won the last six games that they have played in all tournaments, including the last four PRO12 games that they have played at the venue, since going down 11-32 to the Ospreys back in Round 1.

Munster have lost just one of their last nine RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures, a 14-25 defeat to Leinster at the Aviva Stadium in early October. The other four away games that they have played in the competition have all brought victories, the last two at Ulster and Glasgow by just a solitary point in each case. Last season, Connacht achieved a season double over Munster on their way to the title. The first time that they have achieved such a feat, and have now won three of the last four clashes between the two Provinces.

The past two weeks has seen Connacht's early season challenge for a top four place in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, evaporate with successive away defeats against fellow Irish Provinces, Leinster and Ulster. On New Year's Day, they face the third of the fellow countrymen, when Munster are the visitors to the Sportsground in Galway. Connacht may be unbeaten at the Sportsground this season in any competition, the only blip on their record being a 24-24 draw with the Cardiff Blues in the PRO12 in Round 5, but they have beaten Munster on only a single occasion in the last 41 encounters between the Irish rivals. That win came in Galway in late December 2008, for the previous Connacht win, you have to troll the record books all the way back to 1986.

After an indifferent start the PRO12 campaign, Munster had embarked on a run of five straight wins that had lifted them to the top of the table, only for the run to come to an end at Glasgow Warriors 18-21 in Round 10. Boxing Day did see them defeat their great rivals from Dublin, Leinster at Thomond Park, and the Munstermen now lie in third place in the table, three points behind the leaders, the Ospreys.

Mathematically, Connacht can still qualify for next season's European Cup. However, defeats in their last two matches in the RaboDirect PRO12, away to the Scarlets and Ulster, have left them trailing well behind their recent Welsh conquerors, with just three matches to make up the 11 point deficit. However, they will be keen to maintain their impressive home record, which has seen them lose just once in any competition at The Sportsground since the middle of December. When they went down to another Irish side, the current table topping Leinster. The 8-16 defeat coming on 4th January.

Connacht's record against the other three Irish Provinces is nothing short of woeful. They have now suffered ten consecutive defeats against their fellow countrymen, and losing to Munster on Saturday, would be a first negative clean sweep of losses since 2007/08. Although they have marched to the Heineken Cup semi-final, Munster has won just once in their last four PRO12 matches, a home success against Treviso in round 17. That recent poor run, has seen the red machine of Munster slip from the top of the table, down to third place, behind Leinster and Ulster, and although their play-off place is almost assured, they face the prospect of having to play away to one of their Irish rivals in the last four.
