Connacht                          Ospreys
Saturday 10th September 18:35 GMT

After the astonishing success of last season, when Connacht claimed a first ever Guinness PRO12 title, an outcome to the season, which was probably every bit as unexpected as Leicester City's was in the Premier League, the Irishmen were brought down with a crushing bump in the first defence of their crown. The side that Connacht defeated in last season's semi-finals, the Glasgow warriors travelled to Galway, and thrashed the Irishmen by 41-5. Connacht will not want to become just the second reigning PRO12 Champions in history, to begin their title defence with two losses. By coincidence, the side that they face at the Sportsground on Saturday, the Ospreys, are the other team who have that unenviable record. A fate that befell them in both 2007/08 and 2012/13.

Ospreys 59-5 win at the Liberty Stadium in Round 1 against Zebre from Italy, eans that they have now lost just one of their last five matches in the RaboDirect PRO12. That reverse came on home soil, in Swansea in Round 22 last season, when they were heavily beaten by 26-46 by Ulster. Last season, the Swansea Ospreys had a woeful time when they came up against Irish opposition, losing seven of their eight matches against the Provinces from across the Irish Sea, including both occasions that they faced Connacht. Their one victory did however come on Irish soil, as they ended a run of 13 straight wins for Munster in Cork by 21-17.

Last week's 51-34 victory in Parma against Zebre, combined with other results, saw the minnows of Irish rugby, Connacht, propelled back to the summit of the Guinness PRO12 table for the first time since November. The win in Italy, was a fourth straight success for the Irish Province in all tournaments, and on Friday, they will be attempting to extend that winning sequence to five games, when the Swansea Ospreys from Wales are the visitors to the Sportsground in Galway. The only visiting side to have emerged from the Sportsground in the last ten fixtures at the venue, were another Irish team, Ulster, when they sneaked a narrow win on December 26th. The Ospreys had a terrible start to the PRO12 season, losing five of their first six matches. They have since recovered in spectacular fashion, and have lost just once in the subsequent nine fixtures in the competition. That was a 9-22 defeat to Leinster at the Liberty Stadium in Round 12.

That run of form has seen them climb away from the lower reaches of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, and they now sit in sixth position, Although they are eight points adrift of fourth placed Ulster. The Welsh side have a good record in Galway, having won on six of their last seven visits there, and they are on a run of three straight away wins in the PRO12. If they can record yet another victory at the Sportsground, they will take that run of away wins to four, for the first time ever in their PRO12 history.

The last automatic place into next season's Champions Cup, on offer to the RaboDirect PRO12 sides appears certain to go to the Scarlets of Wales, who need just two points from their trip to Italy on Saturday, where they face Benetton Treviso. For Connacht, such a result will mean that they require a victory to keep them ahead of Edinburgh, and put them into the mini-qualifying tournament for the last Champions Cup, along with Gloucester and the club finishing in seventh place in the Top 14. Prior to their last fixture, Connacht had lost four successive games in the PRO12, but brought that sequence to an end with a try-scoring bonus point win by 40-10 in Parma against Zebre.

Ospreys who are the visitors to the Sportsground in Galway on Saturday, go into the contest needing a bonus point win to be certain of home advantage in the Play-Offs. With only five points dropped in their last six PRO12 matches, the Swansea Ospreys are the form team in the tournament, with the last defeat coming at the Glasgow Warriors in Round 15. Connacht have only beaten the Welsh Region on one occasion in the last 13 attempts, which came back in 2008, when they won by 22-10.

Connacht will be up against a difficult opposition in Swansea Ospreys when the two teams meet at the Galway Sportsground in the RaboDirect PRO12 match. The game will be played on November 26, Saturday and the match starts at 18:30 hours local (18:30 GMT) Ospreys have been the form team of the season so far. They have played eight games and won six of them – with only one match ending in defeat. This defeat had come recently, which should give the Connacht a chance to make things happen. Incidentally, Ospreys will be going into the match, having been held to a 9-9 draw in their previous match by Scarlets, the eighth-placed side in the competition.

Connacht, on the other hand, are placed ninth in the standings and have won only three of their eight matches. Their last four matches in this competition have ended in defeats which means that their form is clearly against them and they will need some sort of a mini-miracle to create the difference. Dan Biggar, who scored three penalties in the previous game and Mathew Morgan should be the players that the Ospreys will look at to lead them out of the mini-mire they find themselves in.
