Connacht have fallen off the pace in recent weeks in the Guinness PRO12 tournament, but have a chance to re-establish their top four play-off credentials on Saturday, when they play host to the table leaders, the Scarlets, at The Sportsground in Galway. The Irish Province had lost five successive matches in all competitions, and slipped to fourth position in the PRO12. However, they managed to bring that run to an end last weekend, when they beat the Russians of Enisei in the Challenge Cup in Galway by 47-5.

Galway remains a difficult place to visit, despite Connacht's recent poor run of results. Only Ulster who won 10-3 on Boxing Day, have managed to beat the home side in the last nine games played at the Sportsground. Scarlets themselves are struggling to find their best form in the RaboDirect PRO12, having won just three of their last six matches in the competition. They still retain top spot however, although Leinster who are second a point behind them, have a game in hand.

If the Scarlets can collect a victory in the West of Ireland at the weekend, they will become the first team to beat Connacht at the Sportsground in Galway in any competition this season.

Although the Scarlets have won the last five fixtures between the two teams, Connacht's last success coming back in September 2011 in Galway by 13-11, the Welshmen haven't won away from home in any competition since they beat Treviso in Italy in February. The Welsh side may be further hampered by international calls, as Wales are playing South Africa on Saturday in a fourth Autumn international.

The season has been a terrible disappointment to the rugby enthusiasts in the Irish outpost of Galway, with just two wins in all competitions to show for their efforts, and both of those coming against the Italians of Zebre, undoubtedly the weakest side in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. The first victory came at the Sports ground in Galway in the first round of the PRO12, ant the second was in Parma in the Heineken Cup. If Scarlets can gain a victory in Ireland on Saturday evening, then the sixth placed side can start a push to put the top four teams under pressure.
