The reigning RaboDirect PRO12 Champions Connacht, welcome their fellow countrymen from the North, Ulster, to the Galway Sportsground in Galway on Friday Evening in Round 6 of this season's tournament. It took until Round 5 last weekend, for the Champions to register their first league points of the campaign, when they defeated visitors Edinburgh by 28-15, victory that also brought a try-scoring bonus point. Ulster in contrast to the early season struggles of Friday's opponents, have the last 100% winning record in the competition, having played and won five fixtures to date, and collected 21 points which places them at the top of the table, with a two point advantage over another Irish Province, Munster.

Although they took a first ever PRO12 title last season, Connacht had a very average record against the other Irish Province, ending the season with four wins and three defeats, and they have managed just a solitary success against the Ulstermen in the last 20 meetings of the two sides, which came at the Sportsground in April 2012, when they recorded a 26-21 victory. That result was only the third time in PRO12 history that Connacht have beaten Ulster in 26 attempts. Ulster's only defeat in the last five trips in the PRO12 away from their Belfast home, came in last season's semi-final, when they lost to Leinster at the RDS Arena.

Connacht may still be the highest placed Irish side in the Guinness PRO12 table going into Saturdays Irish derby contest at Galway Sportsground against Leinster, but their most recent game in the tournament, saw a six match winning streak come to an end, when they somewhat surprisingly lost away to the lowly Cardiff Blues by 16-20. That result also saw the men from Galway give up top spot in the table to another Welsh region, the Scarlets, who have a single point advantage. Ulster's last game in the tournament before a two week break for European competition. which saw them record two sensational wins against the French giants from Toulouse, was a 14-7 victory against Edinburgh in Belfast.

However, the men from the North of Ireland have not won back to back RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures since April, and they face a Connacht team that is unbeaten in Galway in all competitions this season. Connacht do not however, have a good record against their fellow countrymen. They have just one win in the last 18 meetings, which came at the venue of Saturday's encounter by 26-21 in April 2012. The last two defeats have been close enough for the losers to have secured a bonus point on each occasion.

The Sportsground in Galway plays host to an almighty all-Irish clash on Saturday. When Ulster travel to take on Connacht in Round 19 of the Guinness PRO12 tournament. Connacht will be glad to return to familiar surroundings, having lost three successive fixtures on the road in all tournaments, including last weekend’s narrow loss at Kingsholm in the Challenge Cup quarter-final against Gloucester. The Galway Sportsground has been an almost impenetrable fortress for the home side this season, with just a solitary loss at the venue in the PRO12 in this campaign, which came on 9th January, when Edinburgh squeezed home by 16-13. Connacht are embroiled in a three way fight with Edinburgh who are equal on 43 points and the Scarlets who have 40 points, for the final automatic qualifying place into next season’s Champions Cup.

Ulster who have suffered just one defeat in their last six matches in the RaboDirect PRO12, have climbed to second in the table, but have probably the most difficult run in of the top five teams, and will be anxious to claim one more victory, that should just about assure them of a post-season play-off place. Although Connacht have a fine record at home this season, they have managed just one win against Ulster from the last 17 meetings over the past decade.
