The two great south Wales rivals, the Dragons and the Blues, meet in their RaboDirect PRO12 reverse fixture at Rodney Parade, less than a week since the Dragons recorded a surprise win at the Arms Park. The Dragons 23-17 victory in the Welsh capital was their fourth successive victory in all competitions. Their last defeat was in Round 9 of the PRO12 when they were beaten away to the Glasgow Warriors.

If they can complete the double over their great rivals on New Year's Day, it will be the first time for a decade that the Dragons have registered five wins on the trot. They have to go back even further to 2003-04 for the last time that they completed a season double against the Cardiff Blues. The Blues are seeking just their second away win of the season in the PRO, the only victory on the road to date, coming in Round 1, when they beat the Italians of Zebre in Parma.

The Blues who are in ninth position in the table, need to start improving on their away form, if they want to have a chance of making next season's Champions Cup. They have managed only one win away from home against another Welsh Province since 2010, when they beat the Dragons in February 2012, their only win out of the last four visits to Rodney Parade.

Eighth against ninth in the PRO12 table, doesn't suggest a classic encounter being in store for the paying public at Rodney Parade on Boxing Day. But the league positions are of little consequence when the Dragons play the Blues. Clashes between the neighboring clubs of Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff have for decades been blood and guts affairs, which have shown Welsh, club rugby at its most competitive best.

Both sides will go into the Boxing Day game, with just one victory from their last five RaboDirect PRO12 encounters. The Dragons defeated Glasgow Warriors in Round 8, while the Blues defeated Benetton Treviso from Italy in round 7. With only one win from their last nine outings against other Welsh regions in the tournament, the Dragons will be pleased at the return of their physical back-row player, Netani Talei, with Thomas Rhys Thomas also making a welcome return from injury.

Newport will also be boosted by Cardiff's poor away record, which has seen them fail to win a match on the road in the PRO12, since they overcame Edinburgh back in February. Though their last road trip, did see them salvage a draw in Italy against Treviso. If the Cardiff Blues could just find some of their Heineken Cup form in the PRO12 then they would be challenging at the top of the table, rather than fighting near to the foot of the ladder. When these two clubs clash though, form counts for nothing.
