Dragons                          Connacht
Friday 4th November 19:15 GMT

Two sides in the lower reaches of the Guinness PRO12 table. the Newport Gwent Dragons and Connacht, meet at Rodney Parade in Newport on Friday Evening. The Dragons have managed just a solitary victory in the tournament this season, a narrow victory by 11-9 against the Italians of Zebre back in Round 2 at Rodney Parade. Since beating Zebre, the Dragons have lost five straight PRO12 fixtures, including two matches at home, against Munster and the Glasgow Warriors. They did win their most recent outing on their own ground, a comfortable 37-16 victory against French club Brive in the Challenge Cup.

If the Newport Gwent Dragons defeat the Irish Province on Friday, it will be the first time that they have won back to back victories on home soil since the New Year. Connacht's defence of their RaboDirect PRO12 title, has been far from impressive so far. Just two wins in six fixtures, leaves them in ninth position in the table with 10 points, a massive 16 points adrift of the table topping Leinster. The Irishmen have not recorded an away win in the PRO12 since early last March when they beat Edinburgh at Murrayfield, although they did win at Zebre in the Champions Cup a fortnight ago. The Dragons last tasted success against Connacht in November 2012 by 14-3 in Newport, since when the sides have played each other seven times, the Irishmen winning on each occasion.

It is little wonder that the Newport Gwent Dragons are floundering in tenth position in this season's RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, with just the two Italian team, Zebre and Treviso below them, given their woeful home form. The Welsh Region have played eight games at their Rodney Parade home in the PRO12, and recorded just two wins, both against Irish Provinces, Munster and Leinster. On Thursday Evening, the Dragons will have the opportunity to down another Irish side, when they host Connacht in the opening fixture of Round 14.

Connacht now lie third in the table, as the result of Ulster's late victory against the Newport Gwent Dragons in Belfast last weekend, but will return to the top of the ladder, at least temporarily, if they can bring an end to a run of five successive defeats on the road. The last time they enjoyed a win away from their Galway home, was back in late November, when they defeated Munster in Limerick. The Irish team have beaten the Dragons on the last six occasions that the two sides have met, with the last victory for the Welsh Region coming in the PRO12 in November 2012, when they won by 14-3 at Rodney Parade.

The RaboDirect PRO12 tournament has not been a happy competition for the Newport Gwent Dragons. They occupy tenth position, with only the Italians of Treviso and Zebre below them, and their chances of finishing high enough to claim a place in next seasons Champions Cup are already hugely remote. On Sunday they welcome Connacht from across the Irish Sea to Rodney Parade, as they seek to build on last week's stunning win at the RDS against the defending PRO12 Champions, Leinster, which brought an end to the Champions' 21 game unbeaten run at the Dublin venue.

However, it is September 2013 since the Dragons defeated an Irish Province at Rodney Parade, when they beat Ulster, and Connacht do appear to have a liking for their trips to Newport, having won on two of their last three trips to the Dragons own ground. However, since the Irish side won in Newport in last season's PRO12 fixture, they have made four further trips to the principality, and have been beaten on each occasion. Currently in sixth place in the table, Connacht appear to have a three way fight on their hands with the Scarlets and Edinburgh for two available Champions Cup places next season.

Newport Gwent Dragons will meet Irish Provinces Connacht at Rodney Parade on Saturday in what is effectively a dead rubber, with neither side having a chance of making it through to the end of season play-offs. It is just this type of situation which has caused concern this season for teams both in the PRO12, and in England and France, where club officials believe that the PRO12 sides gain an advantage from the fact that their players do not have to play flat out each week, whereas, with the threat of relegation, as well as the chase for European qualifying positions, as well as championship play-offs, English and French clubs are forced to play their best teams in every match.

The Newport Gwent Dragons will be looking to extend their unbeaten run at Rodney Parade, where they haven’t been beaten in the competition since Munster lowered their colors in round 9, and to end a run, that has seen them lose six successive matches to Irish Provinces. Connacht will be trying to win a fourth successive RaboDirect PRO12 match for the first time since 2002/03, though this will require a second consecutive away win, something that the Province hasn’t achieved since March 2005.

The Newport Gwent Dragons are almost at the bottom of the RaboDirect Pro12 table. They are not the only team with two wins, but they are severely lacking in bonus points, earning just one, and that gives them a total of nine.
