Dragons                          Edinburgh
Sunday 27th November 15:30 GMT

Two sides that are struggling in the lower reaches of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, the Newport Gwent Dragons and Edinburgh, face each other in the final match of Round 9 at Rodney Parade in Newport. The Dragons have managed just two victories in the PRO12 this season in the first eight rounds, both coming at home, against Zebre from Italy by 11-6 in Round 2, and then against the reigning Champions Connacht last weekend by 21-16. The Dragons have accumulated just 11 points from eight games, and going into Round 9, find themselves down in tenth place in the table, with only the two Italian sides, Zebre and Benetton Treviso, below them.

Edinburgh are three points and one place above their Welsh hosts, with three wins to their credit. All three games that the Scots have won in the PRO12 this season have all been recorded at Murrayfield. They have played just three away matches this season in the PRO12, losing all of them, at the Blues, Munster and Connacht. With fourth positioned Scarlets already a distant 13 points ahead of Edinburgh and 16 ahead of the Dragons, it seems highly unlikely that either side has any real chance of progressing to the end of season play-offs, even at this early stage of the campaign.

The Newport Gwent Dragons will face Edinburgh at Rodney Parade on Sunday looking to bring an end to a losing streak in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament that stretches back five matches to Round 13, when they defeated Leinster at home by 23-13. It has been a woeful PRO12 campaign for the Dragons, who are in 10th place in the table, with only the two Italian participants below the. Although only occupying seventh position in the table themselves, Edinburgh have all still to play for. They are just one place and four points behind their rivals the Glasgow Warriors, although the Warriors do have a game in hand. The side that finishes highest of the two at the end of the regular season, will claim the Scottish place in next season's Champions Cup.

Edinburgh haven't travelled well this season, with only a single away success since Round 2. Even then the game was played in their own Murrayfield Stadium, when Glasgow were forced to move the fixture due to the state of their own Scotstoun ground. However, the Scottish outfit have a fine record against the Dragons, only being beaten once in the last seven meetings between the two. The first game this season was played in late November and ended in a comfortable 32-13 win for the Scots.

The Newport Gwent Dragons who entertain Edinburgh at Rodney Parade on Friday evening have little but pride to play for, and perhaps the incentive of ensuring that they finish above their greatest rival the Cardiff Blues in the RaboDirect PRO12 table. The visitors on the other hand, having suffered the heartbreak of losing the European Challenge Cup final to Gloucester last Friday at the Stoop, are still in with every chance of securing a place in next season's Champions Cup. They need to make up the single point advantage that the Scarlets currently hold over them, and secure sixth place in the final table. The Newport Gwent Dragons were beaten in their most recent PRO12 match, on judgement day at the Millennium Stadium, when the Scarlets took the points with a 29-10 win, that halted the Dragons three game winning streak in the tournament. On Friday though, they will be defending a three game winning run at their home ground.

The sides have met twice already this season, with the Scots victorious on both occasions, once in the PRO12 back in Round 6, and more recently at Murrayfield in the Challenge Cup semi-final. Those two defeats forming part of a run of five consecutive defeats suffered by the Welsh Region against Scottish sides.

Newport Gwent Dragons and Edinburgh will play their postponed RaboDirect PRO12 match at Rodney Parade on Thursday evening. The match having originally been scheduled for 9th February, it was postponed due to the pitch being waterlogged. Both sides are struggling to make any sort of impact on this season's tournament, and look unlikely to finish high enough in the table, to qualify via the PRO12 for next season's European Cup. The Welshmen of Newport Gwent Dragons have managed just one victory this year in the RaboDirect, and that came by the narrowest of margins, 24-23 in round 15, at home to the Glasgow Warriors. 2014 has hardly been kinder to the Scots from Edinburgh, having recorded just a single PRO12 success since the New Year, which came against the Ospreys at Meggetland on 28 February, by 31-25. Edinburgh have yet to win on the road in this season's PRO12, and indeed they have to go back to March 2013 to find their last victory on the road in the competition, when they beat the Italians of Zebre, their one and only away win, since December 2012.

The Scots have beaten the Dragons on the last two occasions that they have met, though both games were played at Murrayfield, and they haven't defeated the Dragons at Rodney Parade since May 2006. In fact their record in Wales generally, is woeful, with just one win in the principality since 2009.

Sunday's match at Rodney Parade, between the Newport Gwent Dragons and Edinburgh, sees the sixth place team in the RaboDirect PRO12 table; take on the eighth place side. Neither side holds out any realistic hope of making it into the top four by the end of the season, and claiming a spot in the end of season play-offs, with Ulster in fourth position currently 13 points ahead of the Dragons, and Edinburgh a further two points back. Although Newport Gwent Dragons have registered just a single victory in their last four PRO12 matches, it was at the expense of their greatest rivals, the Cardiff Blues, who they defeated by 22-16 on Boxing Day at Rodney Parade. The only two losses that they have suffered on home soil this season in the PRO12 were both to Irish Provinces.

Sunday, will be the first time that Edinburgh have played an away fixture in the PRO12 since 22 November, when they were thumped at Ravenhill, Belfast by Ulster, to the tune of 17-41. While they may not be used to taking such heavy defeats on the road, the Scots are used to losing when away from Murrayfield, having won just once in their last ten games away from home, and that was against the hapless Italians of Zebre, whom they beat by 9-7 in Parma at the end of last March.

Saturday, February 18th in the RaboDirect PRO12, the Dragons take on Edinburgh in Newport with the match scheduled to start at 18:30 local time. The Newport Gwent Dragons are currently the eleventh team on the table after winning three games and taking one game to a draw. They have nine losses and have been able to procure only seventeen points. Edinburgh is in ninth and they have played fourteen games rather than thirteen. They have four wins, but they have one draw and nine losses as well and have twenty three points keeping them in their spot.
