The Newport Gwent Dragons having nothing but their pride left to play for in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, in which they have had the most dreadful of seasons, winning just four games, and losing the other 11. In total, the Dragons have collected a mere 20 points, and are in tenth position in the standings, with only the two Italian participants, Treviso and Zebre below them. All four of the Dragons victories have come at Rodney Parade in Newport, where they face Irish Province Leinster on Friday Evening. The successes have come against the Italian pair, and also in back to back matches against Connacht and Edinburgh in November.

Leinster won their fourth straight victory in the Pro12 last weekend, as they hammered Edinburgh by 39-10 in Dublin. A result that helped to lift them to second in the table, just three points behind their great rivals Munster, who coincidentally were the last side to defeat Leinster in the Pro12, on Boxing Day. When the two sides faced each other at the RDS at the beginning of December, Leinster were the victors by 28-15. In previous Pro12 fixtures in Wales this season, Leinster have beaten the Cardiff Blues, but were beaten at the Scarlets 29-38.

The Guinness Pro12 tournament resumes on Friday Evening, with a game at Rodney Parade between The Newport Gwent Dragons and Leinster from Ireland. Having claimed a quarter final spot in the Challenge Cup, which won't be played until April, the Dragons will now be looking to improve their "domestic" form. They currently occupy eleventh position, with only the winless Italians fro Benetton Treviso below them. The Dragons only win in the last four matches that they have played in all tournaments, was a 31-18 win against the French club Castres, who they beat 31-18 in Newport on January 15th. The Welsh side have only managed to win three of the 11 RaboDirect PRO12 matches they have contested this season, the last of which was at home to Munster by 22-6 in Round 9. The only time that they have won in the PRO12 in their last six attempts.

Leinster who had a miserable Champions Cup campaign, in contrast have won seven successive PRO12 games, and sit second to the Scarlets, who were the last side to beat them in the tournament, back in mid-October. The Scarlets have a one point advantage over the Irish Province, but the Irishmen have a game in hand. The two sides met in Round 3 of this season's PRO12, when Leinster won a comfortable 37-13 victory.

Newport Gwent Dragons have had a woeful season in the RaboDirect PRO12, keeping their best form and performances for the Challenge Cup, in which they defeated their neighbours and great rivals the Cardiff Blues last weekend, to clinch a first ever European semi-final place. On Sunday they welcome the Irishmen of Leinster to Rodney Parade in Round 19 of the PRO12.

Reigning Champions Leinster find themselves in fifth position with four regular season fixtures left to play, and struggling to make the post-season play-offs, as they seek a third successive title. They trail fourth place Ospreys by four points, and know that they can ill afford for that gap to get any bigger as they go into the final weeks of the season. The Dragons are seeking a season’s double over the holders, having pulled off a major surprise at the RDS in Round 14. It would be the first time that the Welsh Region had ever achieved that feat against the Irishmen. While they have advanced to yet another Champions Cup semi-final, Leinster have been struggling in the PRO12 in recent weeks. They have registered just a single win in their last five games in the tournament, and that came against the bottom side Zebre in Dublin by 29-8 in late February.

After such a promising start to the season, the wheels have not exactly come off of the Newport Gwent Dragons bus, but they have certainly hit a stuttering patch of form, and have suffered back to back defeats over the past two weeks, in the Amlin Challenge Cup, and the PRO12. However, they are defending a proud record at Rodney Parade on Friday Evening, when the Irish giants from Leinster come calling, having not lost a RaboDirect PRO12 match at home since last March, when ironically, the visitors on that occasion were also Leinster. Having won their two opening Heineken Cup fixtures, Leinster made it three wins on the bounce last weekend, when they defeated Irish rivals Connacht at the RDS. Although they were made to work much harder for their success than they might have anticipated, having taken the lead in the match for the first time, as late as the 77th minute.

Leinster have yet to taste defeat to a Welsh region in 2013, the last team from the principality to defeat them, being the Ospreys back in November 2012, at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. The last six matches between these two sides have all resulted in wins for the Irishmen, the last time the Dragons tasted success being in December 2009 at Rodney Parade.
