Edinburgh                          Cardiff Blues
Friday 24th February 19:05 GMT

Edinburgh and the Cardiff Blues face each other on Friday Evening in Round 16 of the Guinness Pro12 tournament at Myreside Stadium in Edinburgh, with very little to play for in all truthfulness. Edinburgh have had a bitterly disappointing "domestic" season, in the RaboDirect PRO12, with just four wins to their credit, to set alongside 11 defeats, and a total of just 20 points. A record that sees them down in ninth position in the table, with no chance of a top four finish and a place in the post-season play-offs, and little chance of ending in the top six at the end of the regular season, as they trail Glasgow by a massive 21 points.

The Blues will still be holding out some hope that can catch sixth position, and secure a place in next season's Champions Cup as a result. The Welsh region go into the weekend's fixtures in seventh spot, eight points adrift of the Warriors. The Cardiff Blues ended a run of three straight losses in the Pro12, when they thrashed the Italians of Benetton Treviso last time out by 57-20. However, they haven't won on the road in the Pro12 since early November, when they also defeated Treviso.

Unlikely as it might be, Edinburgh could yet still claim a place in next season's Champions Cup, through a top six finish in the RaboDirect PRO12. To do so, they will need to secure a try-scoring bonus point victory against their visitors to Murrayfield on Saturday, the Cardiff Blues. They will then also need other results to go their way on the final day of the regular season. The Scots have dropped to eighth position in the table, as the result of successive defeats in Ireland, against Leinster 23-30 and Munster 19-27. However, they have a fine home record at Murrayfield, where they have only been beaten once in all tournaments since last November.

The Blues, who are one place and one point behind Edinburgh in the table, found their four match winning streak coming to an end last weekend against the Ospreys in their "Judgement Day" fixture. That result leaves them six points adrift of sixth position, and therefore, out of the running for a Champions Cup place. When the two sides clashed in Cardiff at the end of January, the Blues were victorious by 10-3. Leaving them with just one loss against the Scots in the last six meetings, a 28-13 win for Edinburgh in Round 8 at Saturday's venue in last season's PRO12.

The Guinness PRO12 tournament is only 7 Rounds old in the present season, and yet Edinburgh and the Cardiff Blues already looked doomed to be amongst the also rans. The sides meet at Murrayfield on Sunday both needing a win to avoid being tailed off towards the bottom of the table. They are currently eighth and ninth in the table respectively, and trail the seventh placed Scarlets by 7 and 10 points already. The Blues have managed just a single win in this season's RaboDirect Pro12, and that came in Round 1, away to the Italians of Zebre. However, they have managed to win on each of their last two visits to Scotland, overcoming Glasgow Warriors in last season's European Cup, and Sunday's opponents Edinburgh in the PRO12.

The Blues have won their last two fixtures, although both were in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, while Edinburgh lost last time out against Leinster in the PRO12 8-33, bringing to an end a three game winning streak in all competitions.

Sadly, there is likely to be little to set the pulses racing for the neutral spectator, ahead of the RaboDirect PRO12 match on Friday night, between Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues at Meggetland. Although they have had moments of stunning success during the season, including a wonderful victory against the reigning champions Toulon in the Heineken Cup, the Blues have had a mostly disappointing season. While Edinburgh too, have had a few ups, including, like the Blues, a memorable Heineken Cup victory, they have recorded a very average season on the whole. Edinburgh's high came when they defeated semi-finalists Munster in the pool stage of the Heineken Cup. The Cardiff Blues, caused a major surprise with a win at the Arms Park in their previous PRO12 outing against Ulster, who were beaten 28-23. However, despite that win, they still sit in tenth position, with just the two Italian sides; Treviso and Zebre below them, and with no chance of qualifying for next season's European Cup.

Edinburgh beat the Dragons in Wales in their last match, but defeat in Italy against Treviso in the game before that, has left their European ambitions hanging by a thread. They need to overhaul the Scarlets from Wales and finish in sixth position in order to qualify, and they are seven points behind with just four matches in the regular season left to play.
