Edinburgh and the Glasgow Warriors meet in the first leg of the 1872 Cup at Murrayfield Stadium on Boxing Day. Although the Cup is up for grabs between the two Scottish professional outfits, the fixtures are first and foremost Guinness PRO12 clashes. The PRO12 has not been a happy hunting ground for Edinburgh this season, with just three wins to their credit. That poor return sees them down in tenth position in the table, with only the two Italian sides of Treviso and Zebre currently below them. All three of Edinburgh's victories in the PRO12 this season have been recorded at their Murrayfield home, where they have also registered stunning wins against Harlequins and Stade Français in the Challenge Cup.

However, they did slip to a shock 14-19 defeat at home against Zebre, who until that time, hadn't managed a solitary RaboDirect PRO12 victory. The warriors have found themselves slipping down the table in recent weeks, as they have suffered three successive PRO12 defeats. Although the Warriors have managed more away wins than they have registered at home in the PRO12 this season, it should be noted that apart from a stunning win at Connacht in Round 1, the other wins have come against struggling sides, the Dragons and Zebre.

Predicting the winner of Friday’s RaboDirect PRO12 match at Murrayfield between Scottish rivals, Edinburgh and the Glasgow Warriors, would seem a straight forward matter. League position and current form, pointing to a comfortable away win. However, local derbies are notorious for throwing the form book out of the window, and this fixture has all the potential to follow that unpredictability. The first leg of the 1872 Cup, between the two teams last week, went the way of the home side, who won a narrow victory in what was a dour but highly competitive match. The result brought an end to Edinburgh’s three game winning streak in all tournaments, their best form of the season. That win lifted Glasgow to second position in the table, as they continue their chase of table topping Ospreys, and seek to hold off the challenge of the big three Irish Provinces; Ulster, Leinster and Munster, in the race for the end of season play-offs, for which only the top four in the table will qualify.

If Edinburgh can reverse last week’s result, it will be only the second time that they have beaten their fellow countrymen in the last 12 fixtures between the two, and only the second time that they have beaten the Warriors at Murrayfield Stadium since 2008. The last such occasion being at New Year in 2008, when they triumphed 28-17.

After their scintillating start to the season, that saw them making the early running in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, Glasgow have struggled for form in recent weeks, and the result of their postponed game with Treviso last weekend, was that they dropped from third to fifth place in the table, and therefore, out of the play-off positions. Their trip to Murrayfield Stadium, for their Boxing Day derby against Edinburgh, therefore, takes on added importance, more than just the mere bragging rights within Scottish domestic rugby.

The Warriors will look to build on their supremacy in the matches for the 1872 Cup, which they have won on eight occasions since 2008, with Edinburgh recording just one victory, back in January 2011 at Murrayfield. Despite their dip in form, the Glasgow Warriors will travel to the Scottish capital in search of a sixth successive away victory in the PRO12, which would extend their club record. If they find their home form once more, they will be near the business end of the table come the end of the season, but three successive losses at Scotstoun in all competitions, is not the form of a trophy chasing side. Edinburgh on the other hand, are in fine form in the PRO12, with only one loss, against Ulster in round 8, from the last five games that they have played in the competition, including an 11-6 victory last weekend over Leinster.
