Edinburgh and Munster meet each other on Friday Evening at Myreside, in the only RaboDirect PRO12 fixture being played over the coming weekend. Both sides will be severely affected by international calls, with the 6-Nations tournament beginning on Saturday. Although Edinburgh have had some stunning successes in the European Challenge Cup, against Harlequins and Stade Francais, culminating in them qualifying for a home quarter-final against La Rochelle, their PRO12 campaign has been far less successful.

Going into Friday's fixture, the Scottish side have played 12 games in the PRO12, four of which they have won and eight they have lost. The 18 points that they have collected leaves them way down the table in tenth position, with only the Italians of Zebre and Benetton Treviso below them. Munster in contrast to their hosts, are enjoying success on both the European and "domestic" fronts. In the PRO12, the Irish Province have won 10 of the 12 fixtures that they have played, including a 28-14 victory over Edinburgh in Round 4. Since losing to their rivals Leinster 14-25 in Round 6, Munster have recorded six straight wins in the PRO12. The Irishmen have accumulated 46 points altogether, which puts them in second position, three behind the leaders, the Ospreys, but with a game in hand.

Edinburgh began the season with four successive wins in the RaboDirect PRO12, during a period when the competing teams were heavily affected by international calls due to the World Cup in England. However, they have since lost successive matches, both away from home, against Zebre and Connacht and slipped to sixth place in the table. On Saturday they will face Munster at Murrayfield Stadium, defending an unbeaten home record this season. Munster who were runners-up in last season's PRO12 tournament, losing a thrilling final against the Glasgow Warriors in Belfast, have suffered just one defeat this season, when they travelled to the Scarlets in Round 5 and lost by just 22-25. The Welsh Region maintaining their own 100% winning record as a result of the outcome.

In the past few seasons, Edinburgh have enjoyed only limited success against their Irish visitors. The last seven PRO12 meetings have seen just a single Edinburgh win. That success came on the opening weekend of last season, when they won by 14-13 in Limerick. The last time that they beat the Irishmen on home soil in Scotland was in September 2011. The Irish Province are frequently able to conjure up a bloody minded attitude away from home, which sees them through games where they are often under the cosh, and have not lost back to back away fixtures since the turn of the year.

Edinburgh will be looking to complete a season double on Saturday, when they host Munster at Murrayfield Stadium, following their shock opening round win back in September at Thomond Park by 14-13. The Scots come into the game on the back of their Challenge Cup quarter-final success at London Irish, taking them to a first ever European last four appearance. Munster on the other hand, have had the benefit of a week off, which will have given their Irish internationals a chance to rest after the exertions of the 6-Nations, before starting the last push for “domestic” honours.

The home side are locked on 43 points with Connacht, three points ahead of the Scarlets with four rounds of the regular season left to play. The team that finishes highest of the three will qualify automatically for next season’s Champions Cup, which the second highest will go to the play-offs. Munster meanwhile are battling at the top of the table for both a play-off place, and even more importantly a top two spot, that would secure a home semi-final place in the post-season knockout phase. Saturday will see a titanic struggle whatever the outcome of a match that will go a long way to defining both team’s RaboDirect PRO12 season.

Edinburgh have found the going tough in recent months in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, and things are unlikely to get any easier on Friday night when they face Munster at Meggetland. The Scottish side has managed just a single victory in their last six PRO12 contests, a 23-19 victory away to the Newport Gwent Dragons at the beginning of April. Although they did manage to pick up two bonus points in a losing cause last weekend, against the Scottish rivals from Glasgow. The first time that they have accomplished this feat in almost a decade.

The Irish Province have slipped up in recent weeks, and have won just two of the last five games that they have played in the competition, as a result they now find themselves having to battle just to finish in the top four of the table, and thereby secure a postseason play-off position. They will be watching for the result from Italy on Thursday, when Ospreys visit Zebre, as this will leave them knowing what, if anything, they have to do at Meggetland to secure their play-off place. Victory on Friday, will give Munster a pair of wins in Scotland in the PRO12 for the first time since the 2010/11 season.

The RaboDirect Pro12 competition will see Edinburgh and Munster go head to head in Murrayfield this week, on Saturday, September 1st at 20:00 local time and an hour earlier GMT. We don't have a table yet this year, because the new season for the RaboDirect Pro12 competition is just starting, but last year, the Edinburgh team ended up in the second to last spot on the standings, which was the eleventh spot. They ended up playing 22 games by the end of the season just like everyone else, but only won six games, with one draw and fifteen losses.

As for the Munster team, they were in a much better position when the season ended. Out of their twenty-two games, they were able to win a total of fourteen and drew just one. They had seven losses and 67 points at the end of the year.
