Edinburgh's narrow 17-18 home defeat to Cardiff Blues last weekend in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, means that they have now lost seven of their last eight fixtures in the competition. The one exception being a 24-19 win in Italy against the bottom of the table side Zebre on New Year's Eve. The Scottish side find themselves down in ninth place in the table with just 21 points to their credit, which leaves them little to play for in the Pro12 this season. The best that they might hope for, is to claim seventh position, and a play-off match against an Aviva Premiership or French Top 14 club, for the final Champions Cup position next season.
However, even to finish seventh, would mean making up a 16 point gap on the Cardiff Blues over the course of the final six fixtures in the regular season. On Friday evening, the Swansea Ospreys are the visitors to Myreside in Edinburgh, seeking to make it eight wins out of their last nine Pro12 fixtures. Unfortunately for the welsh side, the one reverse during that run, came in a vital top of the table clash against Munster in Swansea, when the Irishmen triumphed 25-23. The Ospreys though are still clinging to second position in the table, just one point behind leaders Leinster, but by the same token, just one point ahead of Munster.

The RaboDirect PRO12 tournament resumes on Friday, with one of the three matches being played on that Evening, seeing unbeaten Edinburgh play host to the Ospreys from wales at Murrayfield Stadium. The Welsh Region are themselves still seeking a first win on the new campaign. With the World Cup only at the halfway stage of the qualifying Pool matches, the teams in the PRO12 are still decimated by international calls on their players. However, the results recorded while teams are having to field largely reserve XVs, could have a huge bearing on the outcome of the regular season come next April. It is therefore, vital for all the sides to accumulate as many points during the period of the World Cup as possible. The Scots will be looking for a third successive win to start the season. If they can record a victory over their Welsh visitors, it will be the first time that they have managed such a sequence since 2009/10.
The Swansea Ospreys have managed just a solitary bonus point, after defeats to Ulster and Munster in the opening rounds. Defeat in the Scottish capital would mean starting the season with three successive losses for only the third time, the previous occasions coming in 2007/08 and 2012/13.

With Scotland hosting Wales in the 6-Nations Championship at Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday, Edinburgh are forced to host their Guinness PRO12 match on Friday night against the table topping Ospreys at Myreside. The last time that Edinburgh played there, was back in September 2001, when they beat Caerphilly 27-20 in the old Celtic League. The Scottish side have had an indifferent campaign on the RaboDirect PRO12 and occupy a mid-table position, with it appears little chance of finishing as the leading Scottish side and therefore, clinching a place in next season's Champions Cup. However, Edinburgh have been in good form at home against Welsh Regions this season, having defeated the Dragons and the Blues, and drawn with the Scarlets.
The Ospreys, although topping the PRO12 table, have lost their last three away games in the competition, and if that becomes fouron Friday night, it will be the first time that they have suffered that ignominy since the 2007/08 season. The only time that Edinburgh have managed to beat the Ospreys in their four meetings, was in February 2014, when they won a fine match by 31-15, a game that was also held away from Murrayfield. Meggetland being the host venue on that occasion.

Friday's match between Edinburgh and the Ospreys from Wales, which is the Scots side's first home game since they defeated Perpignan in the Heineken Cup on 11 January, will take place at Boroughmuir Meggetland, which becomes the 38th venue to host a game in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Ospreys have lost two of their last three matches, including last weekend’s home loss to table toppers Munster, in the tournament, and leave their qualification for the end of the season play-offs in the balance. Glasgow Warriors loss on the road to the Newport Gwent Dragons last weekend, kept the Swansea Ospreys in the top four, but they led the Scottish team by just three points, and they have played two games more than the Warriors.
Edinburgh themselves are in the middle of a poor run of form in the competition, having lost their last three matches, and trail poorly in eighth place in the PRO12 table, though they will hope that with history on their side, they can halt their poor recent run, as the Ospreys have won just once on their last seven visits to Scotland, which came by the narrowest of margins, 15-14 over Edinburgh at Murrayfield in February 2012.

Friday, the 23rd of November, Edinburgh and the Swansea Ospreys play in Murrayfield Stadium at 19:05 local time in the RaboDirect Pro12 competition. Edinburgh is the team in tenth right now, one of the two teams that have only won two games so far this season. That's worse than everyone except Zebre who hasn't been able to win a single game and has only three points, all from bonuses. As for Edinburgh, they share their number of wins with the Dragons, but have four more points by virtue of the five bonus points they have earned.
The Ospreys are in fifth place right now and they have eight games played like everyone else, and five wins and three losses from those games. They have 23 points and are tied for points with Munster right now.
