Edinburgh have won just twice in seven attempts in the Guinness PRO12 tournament this season, but both victories have come on home soil at Murrayfield. On Friday Evening they will try to make that three wins in five home fixtures, when they welcome Ulster from across the Irish Sea to their home stadium. After last week's dismal loss in front of their own fans, to the previously winless Zebre from Italy, the Scots will be anxious to make amends with both an improved performance, and a winning result. Ulster began the PRO12 season in runaway form, winning all five of their opening fixtures, and topping the table. However, they have suffered subsequent defeats, both to fellow Irish Provinces, 25-30 in Galway to Connacht, and then last weekend in Belfast, when a late drop goal saw Munster sneak a 15-14 victory.

Ulster have now dropped to fifth in the RaboDirect PRO12 table with 23 points, leaving them three points behind the leaders Leinster. Edinburgh reside down in eighth place with just 10 points to their credit. The Ulsterman have already travelled to Scotland once this season, winning at the Glasgow Warriors in Round 4 by 22-17. They will look to extend a run of just one defeat in the last six meetings with Friday's opponents, which came at Murrayfield in Round 4 of last season's PRO12, when the scots triumphed by 16-10.

The Guinness PRO12 returns on Friday, and in action at Murrayfield Stadium are Edinburgh, who are one of the three teams with 100% winning records after the first three rounds of action. The other two, being the Scarlets and Munster. Strangely, none of the three unbeaten sides has yet managed to register a bonus point, leaving them locked at the head of the table on 12 points. Although the Scots are difficult to bet at Murrayfield, where they have won three of their last four RaboDirect PRO12 matches, they have lost five successive games at the venue against Irish opposition.

Edinburgh's opponents on Friday will be Ulster, who will be looking to inflict more pain on the home side, by the men from across the Irish Sea. However, Ulster's away form during 2015 has been less than average, with just a solitary success on the road since February. That was in galway against Connacht in April. Ulster currently in fifth position in the table, with two wins, and a defeat to the Scarlets so far, will hope to maintain their ascendancy over the Scottish side, who have managed just one win in the last nine encounters between the teams, a 14-8 success at Murrayfield in 2013.

Edinburgh produced a stunning 24-16 last weekend against the table topping Ospreys, a result that saw the Welsh Region drop to third in the table, but amazingly also saw the Scots drop a place to seventh, as the result of the Scarlets bonus point win against Connacht. They now play host to Ulster, who jumped into the top four places last weekend with their 40 point demolition of Italians Treviso in Belfast. Although the Scottish team have won eight successive games at home, they have been beaten on home soil the last three times that they have faced Irish opposition. Their last success coming against Leinster in December 2013 at Murrayfield. While Ulster continue to battle for a top four place, and a post-season play-off position, as well as a high enough finish in the table to clinch a Champions Cup place next season, Edinburgh are well out of the running for both.

Ulster have held the upper hand in recent seasons between the two sides, with seven wins from the last eight clashes between the outfits, with Edinburgh's only success in that time coming in March 2013, 14-8 at Murrayfield Stadium. However, they have won only once away from Belfast in their last eight fixtures.

Edinburgh may be returning to Murrayfield to face Ulster with mixed emotions. Due to the state of the pitch at the home of Scottish rugby, their last home match, against the Ospreys from Wales, was switched to the more intimate and atmospheric setting of Meggetland, and they recorded a 31-25 win, which ended a three match losing streak. Ulster who sit in third place in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, behind fellow Irish Provinces, and great rivals, Leinster and Munster, look as if they will occupy a play-off position, leaving the Ospreys to battle with Glasgow for the fourth and final Play-off spot. The Irish team has won their last seven matches in all competitions, their last defeat being against Leinster at the RDS in round 11 of the PRO12, and their last two games in the competition against the Dragons and Scarlets from Wales, have brought try-scoring bonus point successes.

An Edinburgh victory might do their rivals the warriors a huge favor in the battle for the play-off positions, and they have won four of their last five PRO12 matches at Murrayfield, but the odds would appear to favor Ulster to win in Edinburgh for the first time since January 2012.

As for Ulster, they are officially the number two team on the table, but they are tied in points with Glasgow. Both of these teams have 61 points and 13 wins, but Ulster has also taken a draw and so has one less loss than Ulster.
