Glasgow                          Cardiff Blues
Saturday 7th January 19:35 GMT

The Glasgow Warriors won both of their Guinness PRO12 fixtures over the festive period, ending a run of three successive defeats in the competition. Victories of Scottish rivals Edinburgh and in Italy against Benetton Treviso, has kept the Warriors in touch with the top four play-off positions. They now have 36 points, the same as fourth placed Scarlets, who they trail as they have won one game less than the Welsh side. On Saturday, the Scots entertain the Cardiff Blues at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow in Round 13 of the PRO12.

For the Blues, Saturday's fixture is very much a make or break contest. They currently trail the Scarlets and the Warriors by nine points, and defeat at the weekend would leave them with what would likely be an insurmountable gap between themselves and the play-off spots. The Cardiff Blues are also five points adrift of the vital sixth position in the table, and a place in next season's Champions Cup. With Ulster who sit in sixth position, having a game in hand against bottom side Zebre, the Blues could also find themselves slipping out of contention for a place in the premier European tournament next season if they lose in Glasgow. Although the Blues have recorded three away wins in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season, two of those successes have been in Italy against Treviso and Zebre, the bottom two sides in the table.

After a run of seven consecutive losses, between Rounds 2-8 which left their Guinness PRO12 season in tatters, the Cardiff Blues have shown enormous improvement since overcoming Connacht at the Arms Park 20-16 in Round 9. However, despite five wins in the last seven matches in the tournament, the Blues still find themselves down in ninth place in the table, and are a massive 13 points adrift of the play-off positions. On Sunday, the Blues make the long trek north to Glasgow, to take on the reigning Champions the Warriors.

The Warriors are in seventh position and seven points behind fourth placed Ulster, but have two games in hand, and could still have a chance of making the post-season play-offs and claiming an opportunity to defend their title. The Glasgow Warriors have only lost one "home " game since Round 1, when they were beaten by fellow Scottish outfit, Edinburgh, the fixture being switched to Murrayfield due to the unplayable condition of the Scotstoun pitch in Glasgow. The Blues away from doesn't augur well for their trip on Sunday. The Welsh Region have won just once in the last 13 attempts in the RaboDirect PRO12 away from their Arms Park home. A narrow 21-20 success at their nearest neighbours, the Newport Gwent Dragons, on 27th December.

Glasgow Warriors hold just a two point advantage over the Irish pair of Ulster and Munster at the top of the Guinness PRO12 table, as the teams enter the final phase of the regular season. On Friday the Scottish side entertain the Cardiff Blues at Scotstoun Stadium defending a record that has seen them undefeated at the venue in the PRO12 since the Dragons were the visitors way back in November 2013. The Blues season effectively ended last weekend with their defeat in the Challenge Cup quarter-final to neighbours the Newport Gwent Dragons. In tenth position in the RaboDirect PRO12, with only the two Italians sides below them, the Blues have no chance of making the play-offs for a place in next season's Champions Cup.

The Glasgow Warriors have won each of the last seven matches between these two sides in the PRO12, and they will expect to make that eight on Friday, given the Blues woeful form outside their own country, with their last win on soil other than Welsh coming in Round 1 against the Italians of Zebre. With an eight point advantage over the fifth placed Leinster, the Scots know that a win on Friday will all but clinch their play-off place, it will then be about finishing in the top two to secure a home semi-final.
