Leinster                          Benetton Treviso
Friday 2nd September 18:35 GMT

The Guinness Pro12 Tournament restarts on Friday with three fixtures. At the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Showgrounds, Leinster will play host to visitors from Italy, Benetton Treviso. Leinster finished last season level on points with their fellow countrymen Connacht, at the top of the regular season table. But claimed top spot by virtue of having won one additional game. They went on to defeat another Irish Province, Ulster, in the semi-finals, by the comfortable margin of 30-18, before going head to head with Connacht at Murrayfield in the Grand Final.

However, they failed to secure a fifth RaboDirect PRO12 title, losing by 10-20 in front of a crowd of over 34,000. While Benetton have long been one of the whipping boys of the Pro 12, they have always managed to be the best placed Italian side in the competition. That is until last season, when they recorded just three wins in 22 fixtures, and ended up at the foot of the table. four points adrift of Zebre, the other Italian entrants. Although it will be a major surprise if Benetton Treviso were to win on Friday in Dublin, with the very participation of Italian sides in the Pro12 being questioned, they do need to put in a competitive performance at the very least.

Leinster go into the final round of the RaboDirect PRO12 regular season in third position in the table, but knowing that a try-scoring bonus point victory over the Italians of Benetton Treviso at the RDS, will secure them a home semi-final. Should Connacht fail to beat the Glasgow Warriors in Galway, in the clash of the top two, then Leinster will need just to beat their visitors by any margin. If as expected the Leinstermen complete a routine victory against the Italians, they will post a perfect home record for the season in the PRO12, having played and won all 11 fixtures.

Benetton caused an upset last weekend in Italy, when they overcame Connacht by 22-21, for just their third PRO12 win of the campaign. That result lifted them above their fellow countrymen from Parma, Zebre, into eleventh position. The highest finishing of the Italian sides will qualify for next season's Champions Cup. Treviso will no doubt be looking anxiously for Zebre's result in Parma against the Dragons. Treviso have only beaten Leinster on one occasion, and that came the very first time that they played each other in the PRO12, back in September 2010, at the Stadio Monigo.

Leinster's season has fallen apart since mid-January, since when they have managed a mere two wins in the 10 games that they have played. Both came at home, against the team sitting at the foot of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, Zebre from Parma, and against Bath in the Champions Cup quarter-final, when they managed to squeeze a win, despite being outscored 2-0 tries. On Friday they welcome another Italian side, Benetton Treviso to the RDS, where the Irish Province have lost just one of their previous 11 matches in all competitions. A shock 14-16 defeat to the Newport Gwent Dragons on 15th February in the PRO12. Leinster who haven't lost to an Italian tem since Treviso beat them in Italy back in September 2010, will hope to get back to winning ways this week, although defeat to Ulster in their most recent PRO12 fixture, ensured that the reigning Champions would not make it through to the semi-finals this season.

For Treviso who are on a run of 5 successive PRO12 defeats, the result could be vital, as they strive to finish above Zebre, over whom they hold a three point advantage. The Italian side finishing highest in the table, clinching the nations place in next season's Champions Cup.

Leinster sit proudly at the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, but they know that ultimately that lofty position means nothing, if they can not win the end of season play-offs, that decide the champion team. Having reached the last four finals in the competition, but only winning on a single occasion, Leinster probably more than any other side in the PRO12 understand exactly what the format of the completion entails, and what is required to be crowned champions at the end of the season. The Irishmen will be glad to be back on familiar ground at the RDS on Friday, have lost their last two matches, both away from home. Against Toulon in the Heineken Cup, and last weekend at the Liberty Stadium against the Ospreys in the PRO12. It is December 2012, since Leinster last lost three successive matches.

It seems unlikely that Benetton Treviso will inflict a third defeat on Leinster. The Irish Province have never yet lost at home to an Italian side, and they have won their last eight home matches in the tournament, with their unbeaten home record in the tournament stretching to eleven RaboDirect PRO12 contests. Treviso have not won on Irish soil, since they beat Connacht in December 2011, and they have only ever beaten Leinster on one occasion, at Stadio Monigo in September 2010 by 29-13.
