Saturday 12th September 16:15 GMT

The early stages of the Guinness Pro12 season are likely to throw up some surprising results, due to the international calls on the competing teams, as the result of the forthcoming World Cup. Leinster's defeat last week at Meggetland Sports Complex against Edinburgh 9-16, is probably therefore, not quite the upset it might have been at any other time. The Irish Province are now faced with avoiding a second successive loss to start the campaign, for the first time in over a decade, when they entertain the Cardiff Blues at the RDS on Saturday.

Under normal circumstances, a comfortable Leinster win would be predicted for Saturday, given that they have lost just once at the RDS in any competition since March 2013, a narrow 14-16 defeat to another Welsh side, the Dragons, back in February. However, Cardiff will arrive in Dublin in buoyant mood, following their opening round win, against the Italians of Zebre at the Arms Park. their 61-13 win, saw they cross the Zebre line 11 times, as they recorded their second largest win ever in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. The 11 tries they scored, also equalled the all time record in the tournament, which was set by the Ospreys against Treviso in 2014.

Matches between Saturday's opponents, do tend to end in only one result, a win to the Leinstermen, The Blues only win in Dublin, came at Donnybrook back in 2004, and of the last 17 fixtures, the Blues have won just once,  at Cardiff City Stadium in early 2011.

The Cardiff Blues have managed just one win from their opening three Guinness PRO12 fixtures this season, and on Friday they have to travel to the RDS to face the reigning champions, Leinster. While Leinster have made an indifferent start to the season themselves, the Blues will have to do something that no Welsh side has managed since May 2012. That is to defeat the Irishmen in Dublin. The Ospreys being the successful side on that occasion, which was the 2012 Grand Final.

After scoring over 40 points in their opening game in Treviso, the Blues have suffered heavy home defeats to Glasgow and Ulster, and have now gone 173 minutes without crossing the oppositions lines.

Finalists for the past three seasons, and champions for the last two, Leinster have made a stumbling start in defence of their title. Their only home game to date, saw them comfortably dispatch the Scarlets, while on the road they have suffered narrow defeats to the Glasgow Warriors, and fellow Irish side, Connacht. It would be a major surprise if the Blues improve on their record in Dublin, that has seen them win just once in the city against Leinster; a success back in March 2004 when the Irish outfit were still playing at Donnybrook.

Leinster will host the Cardiff Blues in the RaboDirect PRO12 2011-12 game on December 2. The Leinster v Cardiff Blues match will be played at the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin and will see Leinster go into the game as favourites. The Leinster v Cardiff Blues match will begin at 2005 hours local time. However, they will only be just favourites given the way things are panning out in the points table. Leinster may be jointly at the top of the table with 30 points from nine games, but their opponents, the Blues have played a game less and are five points behind.

A win with a bonus point for the Cardiff Blues will tie the two teams up and that is something that Leinster will need to avoid at all costs. Leinster will be fairly confident of their showing, having won six games in a row, going into this encounter. The Blues, on the other hand, have won three in three, with their last loss dated way back on October 1. Since then, the Cardiff Blues have assembled the side well enough to make things happen. Eoin O’Malley will be the player to look out for Leinster while the Blues will need Tom James to fire for them.
