Leinster                          Zebre
Friday 6th January 19:35 GMT

Leinster will be confident of securing a bonus point victory in Round 13 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament on Friday Evening, when they face the Italians from Parma, Zebre, at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Showgrounds in Dublin. While the Irish Province are riding high in third position in the table, and have lost just three times in the competition this season, their visitors prop up the rest of the competing sides, with just nine points to their credit from the 10 matches that they have played. An understrength Leinster side travelled to Thomond Park on Boxing Day, and was beaten by their great rivals Munster, but with the boot on the other foot, they defeated an injury hit Ulster at the RDS five days later.

They now have 41 points to their credit, which leaves them five points adrift of leaders Munster, who don't play in the PRO12 this weekend, as they make up their game in hand in the Champions Cup, the previously postponed fixture with Racing 92. Zebre have had another woeful season in the PRO12, with just a solitary victory to their name in ten attempts. A surprise 19-14 win in Edinburgh in Round 7. The Italians have lost their other four away matches in the PRO12, conceding on average nearly 40 points per game. They have played in Ireland only once so far this campaign, losing 5-49 in Round 5 at Munster.

Dublin based Leinster will hope to extend their unbeaten run at the RDS in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, to ten matcheson Friday Evening, when they entertain the Italians from Parma, Zebre. The last team to beat the Irish Province at the Dublin home, was the Newport Gwent Dragons, who recorded a shock victory in the PRO12 on 15th February last year.

It was a shock defeat to the Dragons at the end of January that prevented the Leinstermen climbing to the top of the regular season table. They now sit in fourth position, but only two points adrift of table topping Ulster, and with a game in hand. Zebre are enjoying the most successful season in the short history of their franchise. Four wins in the PRO12, two of which came against fellow countrymen, Benetton Treviso over the Christmas Holiday period, has seen them accumulate 18 points, which still leaves them in eleventh position. Leinster have a perfect 100% winning record against Zebre, with six wins out of six, and five try scoring bonus points to their name during that run. The closest that Zebre have come to the Irishmen, was when they were beaten 3-20 in Parma in October 2014.

Reigning RaboDirect PRO12 champions Leinster, will be grateful that their next fixture in the tournament is against the Italians from Parma of Zebre, who are currently at the foot of the PRO12 table. The Irish Province have failed to win either of their last two matches, a Champions Cup draw in Coventry against Wasps, and last week a shock 14-16 defeat to the lowly Newport Gwent Dragons. Another slip on Friday at the RDS Arena Stadium would be the first time for over two years that Leinster have gone three games without a win.

They are also looking to ensure that they don't suffer successive defeats at the RDS for the first time in their history. Taking into account that Zebre have won only two away matches since they were formed, the prospect of an away win on Friday does seem remote. If Leinster think that they are on a poor run, then they should look no further than Zebre's recent record of just one win in their previous nine fixtures. A win in mid-January against Brive in the Challenge Cup. The odds are very much on a sixth Leinster win against the Italian team, from the six matches between the two outfits, with the Irishmen likely to at least match their average of four tries per game against these opponents.

Leinster seem to be judging their RaboDirect PRO12 campaign perfectly, having taken top spot from their fellow Irish Province Munster, following the Munstermen’s shock defeat at the Scarlets in Wales. They now hold a single point advantage over their rivals, with six rounds of the regular season remaining. Leinster themselves have won eight matches on the bounce in all competitions, including a narrow 28-25 against fifth placed Glasgow Warriors in their last PRO12 outing, and have suffered just a single reverse in the PRO12 since round 5, which was a narrow 6-11 loss in Edinburgh just before Christmas. Their home record at the RDS is even more impressive, having not lost there in any competition, since Ulster were the visitors at the end of March 2013.

Although the bottom of the table Italians of Zebre, who lost every match during their first season in the PRO12, did record their third victory of the season in their last outing, which secured a season’s double over the Cardiff Blues, the chances of them securing back to back victories for the first time ever, seem highly unlikely. Leinster and Zebre have met three times previously, with the Irish side emerging victorious on each occasion.

Zebre is down at the very bottom right now, and while the Ulster team is undefeated, the Zebre team is the exact opposite without a single win to their credit yet. They have been able to earn four points from bonuses.
