Saturday 26th November 14:00 GMT

Munster will defend their unbeaten season's record in all tournaments at Thomond Park in Limerick on Saturday, when they welcome the Italians of Benetton Treviso to their spiritual home in Round 9 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. The Irish Province are in second position in the table going into this weekend's fixtures, with 28 points to their credit, three less than their fellow countrymen and great rivals from Leinster. The only defeat that the Irishmen have suffered on home soil this season came in Round 2, when they lost by 23-24 to the Cardiff Blues, the fixture taking place in Cork, which is Munster's alternative home venue.

The Italians arrive in Ireland firmly rooted to the foot of the PRO12 table, having managed just a single win in eight attempts this season. That solitary success was in round 4 in Italy against the Newport Gwent Dragons 27-11. Benetton Treviso have made just one previous trip to Ireland during the current campaign, when they were beaten in Dublin by Leinster 8-20 in Round 1. The only other game that they have played against an Irish Province was in Treviso against Ulster in Round 2, when they were beaten by 11-22.

Munster failed to join Leinster and the Ospreys as four times winners of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, when after an unbeaten run of six matches, they lost last season's Grand Final to the Glasgow Warriors. On Saturday, the Munstermen welcome the Italians of Benetton Treviso to the Irish Independent Park in Cork, a venue where they have remained undefeated since January 2013, when Cardiff Blues were the victors. The last time they tasted defeat on home soil, was against the Ospreys at Thomond Park, Limerick in Round 4 last season, since when they have nine successive home games in the PRO12 tournament.

It would be a major surprise, despite the demands of the Irish international team on the Munstermen, if the Italians who are also affected by the upcoming World Cup, should register a win on Saturday. The two sides have met seven times in all competitions on Irish soil, and the Italians have yet to record their first win. In fact, the Italian outfit haven't won on the road against any opponent since defeating the Scarlets in wales in Round 22 of the 2012/13 season. The last time that Treviso beat Munster was in Italy in Round 3 in 2013, since when Munster have won all three fixtures between the teams.

Not only did Munster’s run of five successive victories in all tournaments come to end with their defeat at Parc y Scarlets, on 1 March, but they also found themselves knocked off of the top spot in the RaboDirect PRO12 table as a result. They do remain unbeaten at home during the PRO12 2013/14 season, the only side in the tournament that has yet to lose on their own soil. This weekend’s opponents are the Italians of Treviso, who are currently next to bottom in the table, with only their fellow countrymen, from Zebre, below them, after a disastrous run, that has seen them slip to seven consecutive defeats in all tournaments, since they beat Zebre 20-15 at Stadio Monigo during the Christmas period.

Not only is Benetton Treviso facing a side that has a 100% home record in this season’s PRO12, but they themselves haven’t won away from home in any competition since December 2012, when they were victorious at the Scarlets in Wales, nor has any Italian team ever emerged from a game in Munster with a victory to their name. Although Treviso can point to victory in their last two encounters with Munster, both matches were played at the Stadio Monigo, where the Italians are far more competitive, than when they are on the road.
