Munster                          Cardiff Blues
Friday 9th September 18:35 GMT

The Munster against Cardiff Blues game on Friday Evening at Independent Park in Cork, a Round 2 fixture in the Guinness PRO12, will be important to both sides, but will be notable to the man in the middle, referee Ian Davies. Davies will become just the 12 referee, and only the fourth Welshman to officiate 50 PRO12 fixtures. Munster began their season with a victory in Llanelli against the Scarlets by 23-13, a third successive win for the men in red in the PRO12 tournament. If they extend that winning record on Friday, they will continue their tradition of being strong starters to a season, that has seen them lose just one of their opening two games in any campaign dating back to 2009.

The Munstermen are almost unique amongst RaboDirect PRO12 sides, in that they regularly play at two home venues. Although their main home ground is at Thomond Park in Limerick. They have been beaten just once in Cork, the venue on Friday, in their last 14 games at the stadium, when they went down 17-21 to the Ospreys in February. The Cardiff Blues were also victorious in Round 1, beating Edinburgh at the Arms Park by 34-16. If they overcome the Irish Province on Friday, it will be the first time that they have opened the season with two wins since 2011/12.

Munster who host the Cardiff Blues at the Irish Independent Park in Cork on Saturday, are one of the three unbeaten teams in the Guinness PRO12 tournament at the end of the first three rounds. Not only will they be defending their 100% winning start to the season on Saturday, but they will also be looking to make it 12 successive wins at Independent Park, a run that stretches back to January 2013, when by coincidence they were beaten by the Cardiff Blues. Each of the sides beaten by Munster this season has managed to take a losing bonus point. Glasgow warriors and the Ospreys have both been beaten by two points, while Treviso were positively pummelled, losing by five points. Munster themselves, have yet to register a try-scoring bonus point.

The Blues began the season with a 61-13 pounding of the Italians of Zebre at the Arms Park, but since then they have been beaten twice in Ireland, by Leinster and Connacht. They will do exceedingly well to avoid a hat-trick of defeats in the Emerald Isle on Saturday. They may be the top try scorers in the RaboDirect PRO12, but that statistic is affected by the 11 tries they posted in the one match against Zebre.

Munster are currently in unaccustomed territory in recent times, with just three wins to their name from the last eight fixtures that they have played in all tournaments. However, in the RaboDirect PRO12 competition, they continue to be as near as unbeatable at home as is possible, with just one loss on home soil in the PRO12 since Round 1, when they skipped up against the Ospreys 14-19 at the end of September. Saturdays match against the Cardiff Blues is being played at the redeveloped Irish Independent Park in Cork, where Munster have won their last six matches, the Blues being the last team to beat them there, at the beginning of January 2013. The Blues who are in ninth place in the table, with just four PRO12 wins this season, have so far failed to beat an Irish Province this season, losing four and drawing one of their five matches against teams from the Emerald Isle.

The win in Cork back in 2013, is the only taste of success that the Blues have had against Munster in their last nine meetings. However, Cork seems to be a venue to their liking, having won three of their five matches at the venue.

Munster may have lost their last RaboDirect PRO12 outing, away to their fellow Irish Province, Ulster, at Ravenhill in Belfast, in what was a thrilling encounter, in which Ulster eventually triumphed by 29-19, but the Munstermen did retain top spot in the table. It is difficult to see the Cardiff Blues toppling the mighty red machine, at their Thomond Park fortress in Limerick, despite the absence on both sides of so many star players, due to 6-nations international calls. The Munstermen have a perfect record at home this season in all competitions, having played nine games, and having won all nine of those matches. Neither have they slipped up at all against a Welsh Region in 2013/14. With five wins from five matches, to their name when they have faced opponents from the principality. The Blues did at least manage to end a four game winless streak over the Christmas Holiday period, when they defeated their nearest rivals, the Newport Gwent Dragons by 21-13 at the Arms Park. However, the Blues have not won on the road in the PRO12 since they overcame Edinburgh in mid-February 2013.

If the Blues do spring a surprise on Saturday evening, it will be their first ever win at Thomond Park, having lost on all six of their previous visits to the ground. Though they did manage to defeat Munster when the two sides clashed in Cork, at Musgrave Park in January 2013, winning by 17-6.
