What should be one of the matches of the season in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, takes place on Friday Evening at Thomond Park in Limerick, when Munster host the reigning PRO12 Champions, the Glasgow Warriors. Unfortunately, thanks to the demands of the World Cup, the match is somewhat diluted, as both sides will foeld largely reserve XVs.

Munster, who have two regular home venues, in Cork and Limerick, have now put together an impressive unbeaten home run of nine matches at their two homes. The last team to beat them on home soil being Clermont Auvergne in the Champions Cup, back in December. For the Champions, who won the title by beating Munster in Belfast last May, this will be their first road trip of the new season. They started the defence of their title with successive home games at the Scotstoun, where they were beaten by the Scarlets, before recovering to win a thriller against Connacht in Round 2.

Glasgow have had the upper hand over Munster, and Irish Provinces in general, in recent encounters. They have won five successive matches against teams from the Emerald Isle, since they drew 34-34 at the RDS against Leinster last March. While Munster's only success against the Glasgow Warriors in the last five meetings, came in Cork in 2014 by 22-10.

Glasgow and Munster, who finished in the top two positions in the regular season table, meet in the final of the Guinness PRO12 tournament on Saturday evening in Belfast. For Munster this will be their first PRO12 final since 2011, when they defeated Leinster at Thomond Park, the last of their three titles.

Glasgow who were beaten at the RDS by Leinster in last season's final, will be the first Scottish team to take the RaboDirect PRO12 title, should they overcome the Munstermen. The Irish Province who overcame the Ospreys in the semi-final last weekend, are now unbeaten in their last six PRO12 fixtures, the 12-26 loss at the Liberty Stadium in Round 17 against the Ospreys, being their only loss in the competition since New Year's Day.

The Glasgow Warriors are in similarly good form. Just a solitary loss in the last seven fixtures blots their record. Like Munster, that reverse came in Swansea against the Ospreys, who won by 21-10. Neither side has a great record in Belfast, where of course they usually face Ulster. Munster have won just once on their last eight visits, while the Scottish outfit won 13-12 in September 2013, their only triumph in the last six attempts at the venue.

Third faces top in the Guinness Pro12 on Saturday at the Irish Independent Park in Cork, when Munster entertain the Glasgow Warriors. Munster are on a run of four successive home wins in the PRO12, and are unbeaten in Cork since the Cardiff Blues beat them at the venue in January 2013, since when they have won seven games on the trot at the ground.

The Warriors opened up a four point gap at the top of the table following last week's win against the Ospreys, and Munster's draw away to the Scarlets. However, such is the competitive nature at the top of the table this season in the RaboDirect PRO12, that only five points cover the top four teams with just seven rounds of the regular season left to play.

Although the Warriors have won only one of their last four games in Ireland, that success came against Munster in Round 19 of last season's tournament, and they have slipped up just once against the mighty red machine on just a single occasion in the last five fixtures between the sides. A 13-6 win for the Munstermen back in October 2013 at the Scotstoun. The Warriors have only one win to their name in Cork, which came back in May 2008.

The clash between Munster Rugby and Glasgow Warriors at Thomond Park on Saturday is of huge importance to both sides with regard to the RaboDirect PRO12 season. Munster are currently in second place, five points behind the table topping Leinster, but just three points ahead of another Irish Province, Ulster. A top two finish is vital, in order to secure home advantage in the semi-final play-offs. Glasgow on the other hand, only finally climbed back into the top four, when they defeated Treviso last weekend and secured a try scoring bonus point into the bargain. Although they still have a game in hand on the fifth place Ospreys, they only hold a four point advantage over the Welsh Region.

While the Warriors were securing a five point maximum last week against Treviso, the men from Munster were engaged in the rather higher profile business of a Heineken Cup quarter final, against the French giants from Toulouse. In a display of awesome power, the red machine of Munster powered past their French visitors by 47-23, to set up a clash with the reigning champions Toulon in the last four.
