Monday 26th December 17:30 GMT

Boxing Day see an almighty Irish derby at Thomond Park in Limerick between the top two sides in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, Munster and their great rivals from Dublin, Leinster. The two sides have won eight and lost two of their ten PRO12 fixtures this season, and have collected a total of 37 points each, putting them one clear of the Swansea based Ospreys. The Munstermen heading the table on points difference. The only defeat that Munster have suffered in their last eight PRO12 outings, was in their previous meeting with Leinster, when they went down 14-25 in Round 6 at a packed Aviva Stadium.

Ironically, the last side to beat Munster at Thomond Park, was again Leinster, which was all of 12 months ago, since when, they have played and won all 10 fixtures that they have played in all competitions at the venue. Their one home defeat in the PRO12 this season, against the Cardiff Blues 23-24 in Round 2, came in a game staged in Cork. Leinster, like their hosts on Boxing Day, have suffered just a single PRO12 defeat in the last eight games they have played in the competition. A 29-38 reverse at the hands of the Scarlets in late November at the Parc y Scarlets.

Whenever the Irish giants of Munster and Leinster clash, the contest is of epic proportions, and the RaboDirect PRO12 encounter on Boxing Day will be no different to other occasions. Munster have dropped to third in the table, while the men in blue from Dublin, have quietly climbed the table, and are now just one position and one point behind their great rivals. While it seems inconceivable that either side could possibly miss out on competing in next season's Champions Cup, only the Irish Province finishing highest in the table at the end of the season, is guaranteed entry, and with Ulster only a further point back, the battle is truly on.

Munster may have slipped to defeat in their last three matches in all competitions, but victory at Thomond Park would see them record a PRO12 double ober Leinster for the first time since 2008-09, having beaten their rivals at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in front of a capacity crowd by 34-23 back in October. However, that was Leinster;s last defeat in the PRO12, and should they continue that run in Limerick on Boxing Day, it will be a fifth win away to Munster in the last eight encounters.
