Munster                          Scarlets
Friday 24th February 19:35 GMT

Two of the top four teams in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament face each other on Friday Evening at Thomond Park in Limerick, when Top of the table Munster play host to Welsh Region the Scarlets, who are in fourth spot in the table going into Round 16 of the competition at the weekend. The Irish Province have been beaten just twice in this season' tournament, once at home by the Cardiff Blues in earlySeptember 23-24, and then by their great rivals Leinster 14-25 at the Aviva Stadium in early October.

Since the Leinster reverse, Munster have won nine straight victories in the Pro12, and have accumulated a total of 59 points, three more than second place Leinster, and perhaps even more importantly they have a 16 point advantage over the side in fifth position, another Irish Province, Ulster. The Scarlets are in fourth position, having won 11 of their last 12 games in the competition, and have a six point advantage over Ulster, but the Irishmen have a home game against Zebre in hand. With Ulster travelling to Italy to play Zebre at the weekend, the Scarlets know how important it is for them to get something out of Friday's trip to Thomond Park.

Munster require two points from their final RaboDirect PRO12 fixture of the season at Thomond Park on Saturday, against the Scarlets to ensure that they are playing in next season's Champions Cup. Should they fail to collect the required points, then they could find themselves pipped to the place in the premier European tournament by the Ospreys. The Scarlets themselves have already ensured their own place in the Champions Cup, as the leading Welsh Region, irrespective of Saturday's result. However, after a season that has seen them vying for top spot in the table for long periods, they will want to finish on a high with victory in Limerick, and give themselves a chance of a top four finish and a place in the post-season play-offs.

The Scarlets won their "Judgement day" fixture last weekend against the Newport Gwent Dragons, after two successive RaboDirect PRO12 defeats, leaving them just a single point behind fourth placed Ulster. The Welsh side have a fine recent record against the Munstermen, with just one defeat in the last four meetings, which came at Thomond Park in Round 6 of last season's PRO12. However, the Limerick venue, where Munster haven't lost since December 27th, hasn't witnessed a Scarlets victory since September 2003, which in fact is their only win at the ground.

Munster have made a stumbling start to the new Guinness PRO12 season, having lost two of their first four fixtures, both of which came at the normally impenetrable fortress that is Thomond Park. An opening day loss to Edinburgh, was followed by a 14-19 reverse against the Ospreys from Wales in Round 4. However, last week, in front of over 40,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the big red machine downed their great Irish rivals, Leinster by 34-23, and mover into the top four in the table. The Munster will want to consolidate on that win, by recording only their second success at home from the last five fixtures that they have played on home soil. The only other win during that time came against Zebre from Italy by 31-5 on 19th September. Friday's visitors to Thomond Park, the Scarlets from Wales, have suffered just a single defeat in their last seven PRO12 matches, when they lost at the RDS to Leinster 12-42 in round 2.

However, they have drawn two of their five matches in the tournament this season, which leaves them in sixth position on the table. Their recent record in Ireland will not fill the Scarlets with a great deal of confidence, having won just once in the Emerald Isle since November 2012, when they won at the Sports Ground against Connacht last November.

Since losing at Murrayfield in the Heineken Cup by 23-29 on 12 October, Munster have gone on a run that has seen them win seven matches on the trot in all competitions. The giant red machine of Munster are currently four points clear at the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, and have suffered just one defeat so far in this season's tournament. A rather surprising 19-29 reverse at the hands of Italians, Treviso, back in round 3. So far in this season's PRO12 competition, Munster has faced Welsh opposition four times, and has been victorious on every occasion. Although the match is being played away from the fortress that is Thomond Park in Limerick, Munster's second home at Musgrave Park in Cork playing host, it is difficult to see a Scarlets team that has just win to their name, from the last five played in all competitions, upsetting the form book on Saturday when they travel to Ireland. Even though that victory came against an Irish Province, Connacht, who were beaten 24-21 in Galway in round 8.

Scarlets might find some solace in their recent record against Munster, whom they have been the last three times the two sides have clashed, including a 13-6 win at Musgrave Park last season. Prior to the beginning of this three match run of success, Munster had racked up 14 successive wins against the Welshmen, between April 2007 and December 2011.

The Scarlets are the second ranked team on the table right now. They have 29 points and need six more points if they want to creep up into the number one spot currently held by Ulster. Ulster has eight wins out of eight played so far.
