Munster                          Zebre
Saturday 1st October 16:00 GMT

Munster will play the Italians of Zebre on Saturday at Thomond Park in Limerick, looking to extend a RaboDirect PRO12 run of success, that has already seen them lose just one of their last six fixtures in the tournament. That reverse came in Round 2 of this season's campaign, when they were squeezed out by the Cardiff Blues 23-24 in Cork. The last side to defeat the Munstermen at Thomond Park, were fellow Irish Province Leinster, back on 27th December, since when they have won all five games that they have played at the venue.

The Italian visitors, picked up just their second point of the season last weekend, when they pushed the unbeaten Blues all the way in Parma, before being edged out 21-23. It will be something of a mighty upset if the Italians were to claim a victory in Ireland at the weekend. They have failed to win on the road since January 3rd, when they beat their fellow countrymen from Treviso. The eight previous PRO12 encounters between these two sides have all gone the way of the Irishmen, and they have conceded just a solitary try to Zebre and 16 points in total over the last three meetings in Limerick.

Munster's shock defeat at the Cardiff Blues last weekend, when they slipped to a 28-37 reverse, was the first time in 2016 that they had played a RaboDirect PRO12 match and failed to pick up even a solitary point. The result also cost them the opportunity of moving into the top four in the table. They have used up their game in hand on their fellow countrymen Ulster, and still trail them by four points with just five rounds of the regular season remaining.

On Friday, the Munstermen will hope that they can heap the pressure back on their rivals from the North of the Emerald Isle, who are away to the Glasgow Warriors on the same Evening, but kick off a half an hour later. Munster appearing to have a much easier assignment, when they play the Italians of Zebre at Thomond Park. The Parma based Italians, are bottom but one of the table, with only Benetton Treviso, the other participants from Italy below them. Should they creat a major shock on Friday, and defeat Munster, it will end a run of five straight defeats in the PRO12, abd will be their first ever win against the opponents, who have won all seven previous encounters.

Having ended a three match losing streak when they defeated the Italians of Benetton Treviso last Friday night by 21-10 Munster will be hoping to end another unwanted results streak when they play another Italian side this Friday at Thomond Park. The Munster men have been beaten in their last three matches at Thomond Park, a losing sequence the likes of which they haven't known since the beginning of the professional era, and they will hope that they can halt that run, by continuing their record of never having lost to a side from Italy in Ireland. It will be a major surprise if the Irish Province don't secure a victory against Zebre, who themselves have slipped to three successive RaboDirect PRO12 defeats, and have lost all 21 matches that they have played against Irish sides in all competitions. The two sides have met four times previously, with Munster gaining three try-scoring bonus point victories, and Zebre just a single losing bonus point during the course of the games.

While the Munstermen from Ireland don't appear to be the same juggernaut of a side that steam rollered its way across Europe in the mid to late 2000's, full of household names, and destroying any side that dared to stand in its way, they are still a formidable team, that knows how to win rugby matches, as illustrated by their record of 11 wins from three matches played in this season's RaboDirect PRO12 competition. The Munstermen are the only side in the tournament that remain unbeaten at home this season, with a 100% record, and with all due respect to the Italians of Zebre, it would be a major shock, if that record didn't continue at Musgrave Park on Saturday Evening. The only time that Munster have tasted defeat in their last 13 games in all competition, was away to their fellow Irish Province, Ulster, who beat them at Ravenhill, in the PRO12 on 3 January, and even then, Munster nearly snatched a dramatic victory, despite having trailed by 20 points, just a couple of minutes before half time.

Zebre would probably consider this season a success, having lost every game that they played last season, which was their inaugural effort in the PRO12. In the current campaign, they have secured 14 league points, gaining seven at home, and seven on the road, including three losing bonus points in their last four away matches. The two sides have met on three previous occasions, with Munster triumphing on each occasion, and despite being without a number of their first choice players, due to international commitments, it is more than likely that the Irish Province will make that four from four at Musgrave Park.

Munster is the fifth ranked team on the RaboDirect Pro12 table right now. They have fourteen points after winning three of the six games that they have played, and losing three others. However, they are just one of three teams that have this record, and that have earned fourteen points so far. The Ospreys and he Cardiff Blues have fourteen points as well.

Zebre unfortunately has had a very poor season so far. They are currently ranked dead last in the RaboDirect Pro12 table. They have not been able to win a single game, and have just one point earned so far.
