After starting the new RaboDirect PRO12 season with three maximum five point victories, the Swansea based Ospreys have slipped to successive defeats on the road in Ireland, against Leinster and Ulster. On Friday Evening they will attempt to get back to winning ways, as they return to their own Liberty Stadium, to face fellow Welsh Region, the Cardiff Blues. The Blues own unbeaten start to the season came to an end last weekend, when they lost at the Arms Park to Leinster, a result that dropped them to fourth in the table, behind the Irish trip of Ulster, Munster and Leinster.

If the Blues claim the spoils on Friday, it will be a fifth consecutive away win in the PRO12, and break their own best sequence of four, which they set in 2010, and equalled on the present run of success. The Ospreys who are one place and two points behind their visitors, have lost just one of the last eight games that they have played against other Welsh Regions, which came in a West Wales derby at the Liberty Stadium, against the Scarlets by 16-25 at the end of March. The overall head to head record between these teams in the PRO12, shows that the Ospreys have enjoyed 18 wins to the Blues seven, with one match drawn.

The Ospreys and the Cardiff Blues meet in a Welsh derby on Saturday at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. The Swansea based side recorded just their second Guinness PRO12 victory of the campaign in Round 7, the last fixture they played in the tournament prior to the two week break for European competition. If they can follow up that emphatic 36-3 success against the Italians of Zebre, with a win against the Blues, it will be the first back to back RaboDirect PRO12 wins for the Ospreys this season. Since beating Zebre, the Ospreys have managed to beat the Sale Sharks from the Aviva Premiership in the Champions Cup, before pushing the French giants, Clermont Auvergne all the way in the same tournament, before going down 29-34. The Blues have recorded just one win in any tournament in the last eight games that they have played. That win was by 50-9 against Italian part-timers from Calvisano in the opening round of the Challenge Cup.

The Blues who have not won on the road in the PRO12 since they made the short trip up the road to face the Newport Gwent Dragons on New Year's Day. Not the sort of record to instill much confidence ahead of a trip to play a side that hasn't lost to another Welsh Region at the Liberty Stadium since 2010.

Ospreys will be looking to take their 100% winning start to six games, when they welcome Welsh rivals Cardiff Blues to the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on Sunday. Five wins from their five fixtures to date in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament has seen the Ospreys to second place in the table, trailing the leaders Glasgow Warriors by a single point. The last visiting team to come out of the Liberty Stadium with a win to their name was Munster from Ireland, who won in Round 15 last season. Since when the Ospreys have won five successive fixtures. Like Glasgow, Ospreys have a perfect played five, won five record in the Guinness PRO12 this season, although the Welshmen have not let any opponent tally more than 15 points against them in any of those encounters. Ospreys have won their last five fixtures at Liberty Stadium since Munster won there in round 15 last season, while the Cardiff Blues have not won at the venue since December 2005, their first ever visit to the ground.

Ospreys recent form in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament has left their chances of a top four place, and a position in the post-season play-offs, hanging in the balance. Their only victory in the last four games they have played in the competition, was a record 75-7 victory of the Italians of Benetton Treviso at the Liberty Stadium, and although they still occupy fourth position in the table, the Scots of Glasgow Warriors have games in hand on the Welsh Region, and will over take them, if they can take advantage of those matches.

Swansea Ospreys will gleam some confidence from their record against their fellow Welsh Regions, having won their last 12 matches against sides from the principality in the PRO12, and they haven’t lost at the Liberty to Welsh opposition, since October 2010, when the Newport Gwent Dragons were the visitors. The Cardiff Blues have yet to win away from home in the PRO12 this season, and last won on the road, back in February 2013, when they defeated Edinburgh at Murrayfield. Their only success in the last nine PRO12 matches they have played was on New Year’s Day, when they beat their nearest rivals, the Dragons at the Arms Park by 21-13.
