Ospreys                          Connacht
Saturday 7th January 13:30 GMT

The Swansea based Ospreys will look to take advantage of Munster's absence from the Guinness PRO12 tournament this weekend, as they play their postponed Champions Cup tie against Racing 92 in Paris. Trailing the Irish Province by just two points at the top of the table, a victory for the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on Saturday, will see the Welsh Region leap to the top of the ladder. The Ospreys have lost just one of their last seven fixtures in the PRO12, a crushing 0-33 defeat at Munster in round 8. One of only three defeats that they have suffered in the competition this season. The other two losses also came also came on Irish soil, against Ulster and Leinster.

The Welsh side have the best home record of all 12 teams in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season, having dropped just a solitary point in their six games to date. Reigning Champions Connacht continue to struggle in defence of their title. Over the Christmas period, they were beaten in two Irish derbies, against Ulster and Munster, and they now find themselves languishing in eighth position in the table, fifteen points adrift of the play-off places. Connacht have only won twice when playing the Ospreys since the 2012/13 season, both of those victories coming last season on their way to the PRO12 title. Prior to the last campaign, the Irish Province last won on Ospreys home soil, at the Gnoll in Neath way back in 2004.

Guinness PRO12 table toppers the Ospreys, entertain fifth placed Connacht from Ireland at the Liberty Stadium on Friday evening, as they look to keep their unbeaten start to the PRO12 season intact. The Welsh Region have won all six of their fixtures in the competition this season, and another win this week against the Irishmen will see them equal their best ever start to a PRO12 season, which was set back in 2004-05, when they went on to clinch the first of their four titles. Connacht themselves are enjoying a start to the season that exceeded all predictions, and probably expectations as well. Just one defeat in the RaboDirect PRO12, at Glasgow Warriors in Round 4, and a draw with the Cardiff Blues, as well as four wins, sees them in fifth position on the table.

The only defeat that the Ospreys have suffered at the Liberty Stadium in any tournament since January was to Munster by 11-25 on 23rd February, and with Connacht only having defeated their hosts once since 2007/08, a 22-10 win in Galway in February 2013, and having lost all of their nine matches at Friday's venue, it is difficult to see anything but a home win.

Ospreys shock defeat in Parma against Zebre last week combined with Ulsters losing bonus point performance at Ravenhill against Leinster, ensured that going into this weekend's final round of matches; the Swansea Ospreys are unable to make the postseason play-offs in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Their second consecutive fifth place finish in the table, will at least offer the consolation of a place in next season's inaugural European Champions Cup.

The only game that the Ospreys have lost at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea in the last five games that they have played there in the PRO12 came against another Irish Province, Munster, by 11-25 at the end of February. History at least, doesn't suggest that the away side will emerge victorious. Connacht have won just one of the last 11 clashes with the Welsh Region, a 22-10 success in Galway in February 2013. The last time that they managed to record a success on Ospreys soil, was a decade ago, when the match was played at the Gnoll in neath. If Connacht does manage to spring a surprise at the Liberty Stadium and take the four points, they will equal their best ever finishing position in the competition, having previously finished eighth in both 2011/12 and 2012/13.
