The West Wales Ospreys open their new Guinness Pro12 season on home soil at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on Friday Evening, with a fixture against the Italians of Zebre. The Ospreys hold the record jointly with Ireland's Leinster, of the most Pro12 titles. The last of their four triumphs coming in 2011/12 when they beat the Irishmen in the Grand Final. However, in the subsequent seasons, they have struggled to make any sort of impact on the tournament, which has become steadily more dominated by the Irish Provinces.

Last season, saw the Ospreys finish as only the third best side amongst the Welsh Regions, ending up in eighth position overall. They missed out on the play-offs as a result, as well as a place in this season's Champions Cup. Parma based Zebre, had finished at the bottom of the RaboDirect PRO12 table in each of the seasons that they have participated in the competition, until the last campaign. They recorded five wins last season, and secured eleventh position, four points ahead of fellow Italian side, Benetton Treviso. As the top finishing Italian side, they are awarded that country's place in the Champions Cup this season.

In any other season, the Ospreys would be looking forward to Saturday's RaboDirect PRO12 encounter against the Italians from Parma, Zebre, with a great deal of confidence, and with the match being staged at the Liberty Stadium, they would indeed expect to register a bonus point victory. However, the Ospreys are on a run of games that has seen them win just once in the last seven outings, a narrow 25-22 win in Italy against Benetton Treviso in Round 4 of this season. That run has left them in the bottom but one position of the PRO12 table after 6 Rounds, with only Treviso below them. Zebre arrive in West Wales, having recorded their first ever bonus point victory last weekend, when they defeated the Cardiff Blues in Parma by 26-15. That was a second consecutive victory for the Italian side, and on Saturday they will seek to make that three, something they have never previously achieved.

Those two wins have seen Zebre rise to ninth in the table, the highest position that they have ever occupied during their short history. A history that has seen them play the Swansea Ospreys on six previous occasions, during which they have managed a solitary win, by 30-27 in Parma in 2014.

Ospreys have the chance to consolidate their top four position in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament on Saturday, when they welcome the Italians of Zebre to the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. Their 26-12 home win against Munster in Round 17 saw them ride to fourth in the table, just two points behind both Ulster and Munster, but also with just a two point advantage over the reigning title holders Leinster, who are just outside the play-off places in fifth. It would be a major surprise if bottom of the table Zebre were to end the Ospreys 12 match unbeaten run at the Liberty. The last visitors to emerge victorious were the Irishmen of Munster in February 2014. The Italians are four points behind their countrymen from Treviso. The highest finisher of the two teams qualifying as the Italian representatives for next season's Champions Cup. Without an away win in the PRO12 this season, the Italians will do well to leave West Wales with even a losing bonus point.

When the teams met in Parma in October, the Swansea Ospreys escaped with a 15-14 win, although the home team managed to score the only try of a tight, if dull encounter. The only time that the Italians have beaten the Ospreys was in Round 21 of last season's PRO12, when they won at home by 30-27.

The third placed Ospreys will be hoping to get their PRO12 campaign back on track, at the expense of their visitors from Italy, Zebre, on Saturday at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. Ospreys have managed just a single win from their last three games in the competition, an emphatic 40-17 victory over their fellow Welsh region, Newport Gwent Dragons, in round 6. Zebre, who failed to win a match last season's in the RaboDirect PRO12, their inaugural in the tournament, are currently lying eleventh out of the twelve competing sides, with just the Irishmen of Connacht below them, having managed a win and a draw from their eight matches in the current season. Their victory came when they visited the Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park, with the draw being against another Welsh region, the Scarlets, on home ground in Parma.

The Swansea Ospreys will look to maintain their 100% record at the Liberty, where they have faced Italian opposition eleven times previously, and emerged victorious on each and every occasion. Last season was the first time the sides had clashed. Ospreys gained a comfortable bonus point victory in Parma, but surprisingly only managed to slip home by a single point in the return home match in January.

On Friday, January 4th, the RaboDirect Pro12 competition will see the Ospreys and Zebre play in Swansea at 19:45 local time and GMT. Right now, the Swansea Ospreys come in at the number five spot on the table. They have eight wins out of the twelve games that they have played so far this season and they have four losses since they haven't had any draws. As for the points that they have earned, they total 35 and they are tied with another team on the table, Leinster, who are right below them in the sixth spot with 8 wins as well.

Zebre is the very last team on the table right now and have had the bad luck of not being able to win a single game so far this season. They have earned some points however, a total of five from their bonuses.
