Scarlets                          Cardiff Blues
Saturday 2nd April 14:00 GMT

Scarlets who host the Cardiff Blues in the Guinness PRO12 tournament on Saturday at the Parc y Scarlets, will go into the Welsh derby knowing that victory will secure them a place in next season's Champions Cup, as the highest finishing Welsh region in the regular season table. A fifth win in six PRO12 matches will also allow them to take a giant stride towards securing a post-season play-off place. Currently in third position in the table, the Scarlets are hot on the tails of the two Irish Provinces above them, Connacht and Leinster.

By the same token, Munster, Ulster and the reigning Champions the Glasgow Warriors are all close behind the West Walians, and ready to strike should they slip up. The Blues have won three of their last four RaboDirect PRO12 games. Even so, they are still in eighth position in the table, a distant 13 points behind the Scarlets, and with only the slimmest of chances of qualifying for next season's premier European Tournament. The two Regions previously played each other in Round 11 at the Arms Park, when the Blues scraped home by 29-27. If the Blues are able to spring a surprise and record just a second away win of the campaign on Saturday, they will complete a season's double over the Scarlets for only the second time ever, the previous occasion being in 2009/10.

The only game that the Scarlets have lost in their last four RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures, was in their most recent game at their Parc y Scarlets home, when they slipped up against Edinburgh. If the Blues secure a win on Sunday, it will be the first time that the Scarlets have lost successive home games in the PRO12 since December 2009. The only Welsh region to defeat the Scarlets on their home soil since April 2010, a period covering 16 matches at the Parc, are the Ospreys, who have managed the feat on three occasions. Since April 2010 fellow Welsh regions have visited the venue on sixteen occasions with the only three victories all being obtained by Ospreys. The Blues have managed just 11 points on the road in this season's PRO12 tournament, and following the Dragons win on Friday, they are destined to finish as the bottom Welsh side in the table. Since beating Connacht at the Arms Park 18-17 on 6th March they have suffered four successive losses in all competitions.

The Scarlets and Cardiff Blues may be separated by just a single place in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, but there is a gulf of 10 points between them, and that single place is the difference of a place in next season's European Champions Cup, and a place Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli in the second tier of European competition. Scarlets recent form has been enough to catapult them into sixth position in the competition and a place in the Champions Cup, with just one defeat in their last four PRO12 matches. A loss to Saturday's opposition by 13-17 at the Millennium Stadium in the Judgment Day game 3 weeks ago. That win on Judgment Day, was Cardiff's first against their opponents from West Wales, after eight successive defeats in all tournaments.

The Cardiff Blues have had a most inconsistent season, best summed up by their run of four wins on the trot in the PRO12 since they were beaten by the Ospreys in round 17. There current run equals their best sequence of results since 2010/11, and yet it has still left them 10 points short of the coveted European qualifying position. Blues away form against Welsh regions has been woeful in recent seasons, with just a single success in the last four seasons, A 16-5 win at the Dragons, back in September 2012.
