Scarlets                          Dragons
Saturday 8th October 18:35 GMT

It is a Welsh derby at the Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli on Saturday, when they Scarlets entertain the Newport Gwent Dragons in Round 6 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. The Scarlets opened the season with three straight defeats, failing to collect so much as a losing bonus point during that run. They have however, recovered in the past fortnight to register back to back victories, against Connacht at the Parc, and in Italy against Benetton Treviso last weekend. The Dragons are just one place below and three points behind Saturday's hosts in the table. Their only win was a dour 11-6 success against Zebre in Newport in Round 2.

The Dragons have lost both previous away trips this season, to Ulster and Benetton Treviso, and have not won away from home against another Welsh Region since Boxing Day 2014, when they defeated their great rivals, the Cardiff Blues. The Scarlets have lost their previous two home fixtures against Welsh Regions, the last win at the Parc against the Dragons almost a year ago. Overall in PRO12 meetings with the Dragons, the Scarlets have enjoyed 21 wins, and have lost just once on home soil since the formation of the Regional sides in 2003, when they were beaten at Stradey Park in the PRO12 way back in September 2007.

The first five rounds of this seasons Guinness PRO12 tournament, have been a woeful time for all but the Scarlets of the Welsh Regions. The Dragons, Blues and Ospreys occupy eighth, ninth and tenth positions respectively in the table, with only the two Italian competitors below them. However, the Scarlets who welcome the Dragons to Parc y Scarlets on Friday Evening buck the trend, and sit proudly at the top of the pile, with the only 100% winning record in the competition. If there were doubts about the Scarlets right to be at the top end of the table, they were dispelled last weekend, when they faced another of the unbeaten teams, Munster from Ireland, and beat them in a tight contest by 25-22. That win stretched the Scarlets unbeaten run in the RaboDirect PRO12 to nine games, and ahead of the Dragons fixture, they have now lost just once in their last 20 games played at the Parc in all competitions.

The Dragons did manage to record their second victory of the season last weekend, when they beat Treviso at Rodney Parade. By coincidence, the Italians were the last team to be beaten at home by the side from Gwent, who won in Italy last March. Should they become the first side to beat the Scarlets this season, it will be the first time that the Dragons have tasted success at the Parc, having lost all their previous nine fixtures at the venue.

The Scarlets meet the Newport Gwent Dragons in an all Welsh affair at the Parc y Scarlets on Sunday afternoon, in the Guinness PRO12 tournament. Scarlets are currently in seventh place on the table, and no doubt will be somewhat disappointed with that early season position, though only their neighbours the Ospreys from Swansea, are above them, amongst the teams from the principality. However, going into Sunday's Welsh derby, the Scarlets have only been beaten once in this season's tournament, but have been held back by having drawn two of their four fixtures. At home to Ulster in round 1 and against Edinburgh last Friday. The Dragons have made a disappointing start to the new campaign, and only registered their first win of the season last weekend, when they defeated bottom of the table, and pointless, Benetton Treviso at Rodney Parade.

Newport are almost French like in their poor record when they play away from home. They haven't won away from their own ground in the PRO12 since they defeated Glasgow back in November 2013. While to find an away success against a fellow Welsh Region, that have to search the records books as far back as October 2010, when they beat the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium in Swanseas.

Scarlets go into their PRO12 match against Welsh rivals Newport Gwent Dragons at the Parc y Scarlets on Friday night, knowing that two points will secure them a spot in next seasons European Cup, via a sixth place finish in the PRO12 table. With five successive PRO12 successes at the Parc, and not having suffered a defeat on their own pitch in 2014 in the competition, the home side will be optimistic that they will secure European competition for next season. However, they will have to reverse a trend that has seen them lose all four matches in the PRO12 tournament this season to the other Welsh Regions. With the Dragons having picked up a mere three points from their last six games in the tournament, they appear unlikely to stop the Scarlets run towards Europe. The Dragons have failed to win away from home in the RaboDirect PRO12 since they traveled to Glasgow in round 8, and they have won just once away to a fellow Welsh Region in any tournament since 2007.

It is quite an amazing statistic to realize that the Dragons have won only a single away match against other Welsh Regions since 2007, which was a victory against the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.

On Friday, October 5th, the RaboDirect PRO12 competition sees the Scarlets and the Newport Gwent Dragons face off in Llanelli at 19:05 local time and 18:05 GMT. Right now, the Scarlets come in at number two, right below Ulster who has the number one spot with all four wins from their four games that they have played. They have seventeen points right now while the Scarlets take second with sixteen points. They have played five games but were only able to win three of those. In third, we have Munster, who is tied with Glasgow and Cardiff with fourteen each.

We find the Dragons in tenth right now with nine points. They are not the only team with nine points; Benetton Treviso has nine as well. The Dragons have won two games from the five played to earn their score.
