Ulster's third straight win in the Guinness Pro12, last weekend in Italy against Zebre by 40-17, has kept the Irish Province very much in the hunt for a top four finish in the table, and a spot in the post-season play-offs. On Friday Evening they will welcome the other Italian side in the tournament, Benetton Treviso, to Belfast in Round 17 of the competition, anxiously seeking another try-scoring bonus point victory, to keep the pressure on the Scarlets who occupy the place immediately above them in the table, with a five point advantage, but having played a game more. When the two sides played each other in Round 2, back in early September, the Irishmen ran out winners by 22-11.
Treviso have lost five straight fixtures in the Pro12, since they beat their fellow countrymen Zebre on December 23rd by 23-12. Their only other victory during the current campaign was also at home against the Newport Gwent Dragons27-11 in Round 4. Treviso have collected just 11 points in their 16 RaboDirect PRO12 games, and sit in eleventh position, giving them a two point buffer between themselves and bottom side Zebre. If Treviso can maintain their advantage to the end of the season, they will be rewarded with Italy's one guaranteed place in next season's Champions Cup.

Ulster are unbeaten in Belfast in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament since May 2014, when fellow Irish Province Leinster were the visitors. Their last defeat at the venue in any tournament was by Toulon in the Champions Cup last October. On Friday Evening, even with a side weakened due to international calls, the Northern Irish side will expect to extend that winning sequence in front of their own passionate supporters, when they take on the Italians of Benetton Treviso.
Ulster began the season with a win in Belfast against the Ospreys, before travelling to Wales, where they beaten by the Scarlets. Benetton Treviso have opened the season with narrow defeats at home to the Scarlets, and away to Munster. Treviso have now lost nine successive fixtures in the PRO12. The last time that they tasted success was in the Stadio Monigo back in February, when they defeated the Cardiff Blues. To find their last win outside of Italy, it is necessary to go back through the record books to May 2013, when they beat the Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets. There have only been two meetings between the teams, which haven't ended in success for the Ulster. In October 2011 Treviso won in Belfast by 23-12, they also drew at the venue 29-29 in 2013. It would be a major upset if the Italians avoided defeat in Belfast for a third time.

Friday night sees a return to Guinness Pro12 action for Ulster and Benetton Treviso, who meet in Belfast in Round 14, their first match in the tournament for a month, when by coincidence they met in Italy, with the visitors squeezing home somewhat unconvincingly by 24-20. Although the fifth placed Irish Province have only won two of their last five RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures, they will point to the fact that only one of those games has been in Belfast, where their only defeat this season, came in the Champion’s Cup against the defending Champions from France, Toulon.
After a disastrous start to the season, which saw them slip to the foot of the PRO12 table, and suffer an early elimination from the Champion’s Cup, the Italian outfit have picked up, and have won three of their last five matches in all competitions. With two wins over the Christmas period against their Italian PRO12 rivals Zebre, they have dragged themselves off of the bottom of the table. The Italian side have not won outside of their own country since they beat the Scarlets in Wales back in May 2013, whilst they haven’t won in Ireland since December 2011, when they beat Connacht in Galway.
