Ulster                          Connacht
Friday 23rd December 19:35 GMT

Ulster will look to keep up the pressure on the sides above them in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament, as well as piling more misery on the struggling defending Champions Connacht, they entertain their fellow countrymen at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast on Friday Evening. Ulster are in fifth position ahead of Round 11, four point behind the Scarlets, but with a game in hand. While their visitors from the West of the Emerald Isle are languishing down in eighth position with 20 points, eight less than Ulster.

After starting the season in unstoppable fashion with five successive victories, Ulster suffered a first loss of the PRO12 season when they travelled to Galway to face Connacht, and slipped 25-30. Two more losses followed, in Belfast against Munster and away to Edinburgh, as the Ulstermen slipped down the table. However, last time out, the Irish Province brought that losing sequence to an end, when they beat the Blues in Cardiff by 35-22. After their historic victory in last season's PRO12 Grand Final, Connacht have struggled to find the same level of form in defence of their title. All four of the victories that they have recorded in the PRO12 this season, have come at their own Sportsground home in Galway. To date, they have played only three matches away from home in the tournament, and have loss each one.

It is unlikely that there will be an atmosphere at a rugby match anywhere in Europe this weekend, that will match the one on offer in Belfast on Friday Evening, when Ulster host their fellow countrymen from Galway, Connacht. A run of just three defeats in the last four RaboDirect PRO12 games that they have played, has seen Ulster drop to fifth position in the table, just outside the play-off positions. The only win during that losing streak, coming at home against Zebre by 32-0 in Round 17.

Connacht meanwhile, arrive in the cauldron of Belfast, having won six successive fixtures in the competition, since they were beaten at the Scarlets by 19-21 in Round 12. Last week's nail biting victory against Leinster, move them four points clear at the top of the table. A raucous and passionate capacity crowd will be roaring the Ulstermen on as they seek to extend their run of success against Connacht, that has seen them lose just one of the last 19 meetings between the two Provinces. A 26-21 win in Galway in April 2012. It will take a Connacht supporter with a very long memory to recall the last time that the men from the West of the Emerald Isle tasted success in Belfast, as it was in November 1960 in the days of the Interprovincial Championship.

A fascinating Irish derby will take place at Ravenhill in Belfast on Boxing Day, with Ulster hosting the "minnows" of Irish Provincial rugby, Connacht, in the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Ulster come into the fixture with a perfect winning record at the venue in this season's tournament, five wins out of five, although they were beaten by reigning European Champions, Toulon, at the ground in the Champions Cup. That form has kept them near the top of the table all season, and very much in touch with the leaders. Although following last week's defeat to the Ospreys in Swansea, they dropped to fifth place on the table. The visitors are just a place behind them on the table, but there is a four point gap. Connacht's unusually high position is due in the main to their own excellent form at home, where they, like Ulster have won five out of five at the Sportsground in Galway.

Ulster have lost just one of the last 16 fixtures between the two Provinces, and should they extend that record, the gap between the top five in the table and the rest, will suddenly become significant, and almost certainly make the challenge for the play-offs, a battle for four places between five sides.

Just a few weeks ago, this Friday night's clash at Ravenhill in Belfast between Irish rivals Ulster and Connacht appeared to have plenty of spice, and lots riding on the back of the result. However, the results of both Provinces over last couple of weeks appear to have left the game a little flat. Ulster would have been hoping to come into the match on the back of a Heineken Cup quarter final success against Saracens of the Aviva Premiership. Instead of which, they can only offer glorious failure from that clash, having just failed to overcome the odds, having been forced to play 75 minutes with just 14 men. They ultimately came up just short, losing 15-17.

Connacht on the other hand, had won four successive RaboDirect PRO12 matches, and had surged from the bottom of the table, to within striking distance of a place in next season's European Cup. Although not quite a winner take all contest, their last game in the competition, away to the Scarlets of Wales, amounted almost to a play off for the final place in next season's premier European tournament. Unfortunately for the Irish side, they lost a classic and thrilling encounter by 30-32, and now trail the Welsh side by seven points with just four matches left to be played.

On Friday, October 5th, the RaboDirect PRO12 sees Ulster and Connacht play in Belfast at 19:05 local time and one hour earlier GMT. Ulster comes in at the very top of the RaboDirect Pro12 table. They have played four games this season and did not lose a single game so far. That gives them a near perfect score of seventeen. The Scarlets take the second spot on the standings right now with sixteen points, and then we have three different teams that are tied at fourteen points, Munster in third, and Glasgow and Cardiff Blues at fourth and fifth.

As for Connacht, we find them in the number eight spot right now with two wins out of five games played. They have ten points, but they are tied with the Ospreys who are one spot below them with ten as well.
