Ulster                          Dragons
Friday 2nd September 18:35 GMT

Ulster begin their bid for a first Guinness Pro12 title in a decade, and only their second ever, at Ravenhill in Belfast on Friday Evening, with a home match against the Newport Gwent Dragons from Wales. Belfast is quite a fortress for Ulster, and few sides enjoy a trip to the North of Ireland to face them on a Friday Night under the lights, and in front of a raucous and impassioned crowd. Last season, saw the Ulstermen creep into the post-season play-offs, thanks to a last day victory away to the Ospreys, combined with the Scarlets defeat at Munster.

However, a fourth place finish, led to their having to travel to the RDS to face Leinster in the semi-finals. On the day, they were no match for their fellow countrymen, and they were knocked out by a margin of 18-30. The Dragons were the worst performing of the Welsh Regions last season. Sadly a position that has been all too regular an occurrence over the past few seasons. They enjoyed only four wins, while suffering 18 defeats through their RaboDirect PRO12 campaign. However, they secured 10 losing bonus points, which suggests that they were not far off having a decent, if not outstanding season.

The only match in the Guinness PRO12 tournament this week, is the re-arranged clash in Belfast between Ulster and the Newport Gwent Dragons. The match was originally scheduled for early January, but was postponed to allow Ulster's postponed Champions Cup fixture against Oyonnax to take place. The Irish Province last played a RaboDirect PRO12 match in Belfast back on January 2nd, when they were beaten in a dour contest 7-9 by their fellow countrymen from Munster. If the Dragons should manage to claim a win on Friday Evening, it will be the first time that Ulster have suffered back to back losses in Belfast in the PRO12 since 2010.

The Dragons arrive in the North of Ireland buoyed by a home win against Leinster last Friday. A result that prevented the Dublin based Irish Province from climbing to the top of the table. However, the Welsh Region have not won successive PRO12 fixtures since April 2015, and haven't won on the road since they travelled to Italy and defeated Benetton Treviso in March of last year.

If form in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season is anything to go by, then Ulster should enjoy a comfortable win at home in Belfast on Saturday evening, when Newport Gwent Dragons are the visitors. The only game that the Irish Province have lost in the tournament in the current campaign, came in Round 4 when they slipped up 6-13 in Parma against Zebre of Italy. The only defeat that Ulster have suffered in their last 13 fixtures in Belfast, was a narrow 20-22 loss to fellow Irish Province Leinster on 2nd May. The last time that the Dragons returned victorious from Belfast was back in September 2008, when they squeezed home 16-14, and with they haven't won on the road in the PRO12 since November 2013 when they beat the Glasgow warriors in Scotland. They did however, record a stunning win in Paris two weeks ago in the Challenge Cup, beating Stade Francais by 38-22.

While Ulster are in third position in the table after six rounds, the Dragons are down in ninth position, and if Newport want to improve that position, they will need to become the first Welsh Region to win in Ulster since the  Ospreys in February 2013.

Last weekend's narrow win in Italy against Treviso, saw Ulster climb back into third place, and an end of season play-off position. They now face the Newport Gwent Dragons, who sprung a real surprise themselves last weekend, by defeating Glasgow Warriors at Rodney Parade by 24-23, a result which saw the Warriors slip out of the top four. Although Ulster have suffered just a single loss in any tournament since early November, which was a 6-19 reverse against Leinster at the RDS on 28 December, they are struggling to score tries, and have not recorded a try-scoring bonus point in the RaboDirect PRO12 since round 8. The Dragons defeated the Ulstermen in round 1 by 15-8 at Rodney Parade, catching their Irish opponents at the start of an inconsistent beginning to the season. But if they win in Belfast on Friday evening, it will be the first time that they have completed the double of the Irish Province since 2008/09.

Dragons recent record against Irish Provinces isn't much to write home about, nor is their record on Irish soil. They have lost five consecutive games against sides from across the Irish Sea, and have recorded just a single success in Ireland since October 2004, which came at Ravenhill in September 2008, by a narrow 16-14.

On Friday, February 10th, Ulster and the Dragons face off in Belfast in the RaboDirect PRO12 competition at 19:05 local time, and GMT time. Ulster Rugby is sixth on the RaboDirect PRO12 table right now. They have won 7 games out of the 13 that they have played so far this season. They have no draws and the remaining six games were all losses. That gives Ulster 31 points and a tie with Cardiff. As for the Newport Gwent Dragons, they take tenth after winning just three games. They have had a draw so they end up with 17 points.
