Ulster                          Edinburgh
Friday 10th February 19:35 GMT

Ulster were looking an unstoppable force when they won their first five RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures this season. However, they have lost five of the subsequent seven fixtures that they have played in the competition. As the result of their poor run of results since beating the Ospreys in Belfast in early October, the Irish Province have slipped down the table, and are in very real danger of failing to clinch a top four place, and therefore failing to progress to the post-season play-offs. Going into Friday's game in Belfast against Edinburgh, Ulster are now in sixth position with 33 points. Although they have a game in hand, which is at home against lowly Zebre from Italy, they are eight points adrift of fourth placed Glasgow warriors.

Victory against the struggling Scots from Edinburgh is therefore, vital for the Northern Irishmen. Edinburgh are well off the pace, with just 19 points to their credit, and they sit in ninth position. However, one of only four wins they have recorded in the Pro12 this season, came against Ulster at Murrayfield by 28-17 in early November. If Edinburgh win on Friday, it will be a first season's double over Ulster since the 2007/08 season.

Ulster found themselves dropping a couple of places down the Guinness PRO12 table last weekend, following their narrow derby defeat in Dublin against Leinster. One of the teams who climbed above them were Edinburgh, who travel to Belfast to face the Northern Irish Province on Friday Evening, where they take on an Ulster team that has lost just once in the City in the PRO12 since September 2013, when Leinster were the victors, since when they have remained unbeaten for a further 14 games in the tournament.

When the two sides met each other in Round 4 of this season's tournament at Murrayfield Stadium, the Scottish side claimed the spoils, winning by 16-10. Another win, as unlikely as that seems, given Ulster's home form and Edinburgh's poor form on the road, would give the Scots a first season's double over their opponents since 2007/08. Edinburgh's only away win in the PRO12 this season was against Treviso of Italy by 27-24 back in Round 2. Considering that the Italy side has lost all eight RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures this season going into Round 9, it is hardly a result to shout from the rooftops, and they have not overcome the Irish side in Belfast since September 2009.

Ulster may have lost their unbeaten record at the weekend, when they lost in controversial circumstance in Italy, to the previously winless Zebra. Their losing bonus-point did enable them to climb above their fellow Irish Province Connacht in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, however, and they are now in third position.

The visitors to Ravenhill on Friday evening Edinburgh, shared a 20-20 draw at Murrayfield, with the Welshmen from the Scarlets. Their only win so far in this season's tournament, came in the opening week, when they secured a 14-13 win at the most difficult of venues for away teams to win at, Thomond Park the home of Munster. The two sides have met 29 times in head to head competition, with Ulster having the upper hand over the years, having won 19 of the fixtures, to Edinburgh's nine wins, and one draw. Friday will be only the second time that Ulster have played at home this season, the previous occasion resulted in an emphatic 33-13 win over Zebre, the side who took their unbeaten record at the weekend. Edinburgh's last away match in the PRO12 resulted in a thumping 13-62 beating at the Liberty Stadium by the Ospreys, who currently top the table.

After a two week break, due to the autumn internationals, the PRO12 tournament resumes on Friday evening, with Edinburgh's trip to Belfast, to take on Ulster. Raven hill has never been an easy place for visiting teams to get a positive result, but has taken on fortress like proportions in 2013, with the only defeat for the Ulstermen since February, coming by a single point, 12-13 to another Scottish side, Glasgow on 13 September. However, Ulster has a surprisingly poor recent record against Scottish sides, having lost their last three contests with sides from across the Irish Sea. After an indifferent start to the season, Edinburgh's form has improved of late, and has won their last two RaboDirect PRO12, although in truth those matches have both been at home at Murrayfield, and were against the Italians of Treviso and Zebre.

The last time that the Scottish side managed to record a victory on the road, and the only time since December last year, was back in March when they beat Zebre by just 9-7. With their last victory against an Irish side in Ireland coming as long as long ago as December 2012, when they defeated Connacht in Galway by the narrowest of margins 24-23. Indeed it is their only victory on Irish soil since 2009.

In the RaboDirect PRO12 competition Ulster and Edinburgh will face each other in Belfast. This match is at 19:05 local time which is the same as GMT time in that location. We find Ulster in the fifth spot on the table right now. They have been able to win nine out of sixteen but have not drawn yet this season, so that gives them 41 points with seven losses. As for Edinburgh, they are at the 11th spot in the RaboDirect table. They have four wins and one draw along with eleven losses out of sixteen games, so they come away with twenty three points.
