Ulster must win their RaboDirect PRO12 fixture on Saturday in Belfast against fellow Irish Province Leinster, if they are to retain any hopes of a top two finish in the regular season table, which would provide a home semi-final. However, their target is realistically just to try and secure a top four finish by staying ahead of the Scarlets from Wales, which would clinch a post-season play-off place. Ulster who are in fourth position in the table with two rounds of the regular season still to be played, have 60 points, which gives them a two point advantage over the Welsh Region, but leaves them eight points adrift of Leinster and Connacht who currently occupy the top two positions.

The Ulstermen have lost just one of their last three PRO12 fixtures, at the Scotstoun against the reigning Champions, the Glasgow Warriors in Round 18. Victory on Saturday will secure a home semi-final for Leinster, who are looking to win back the title that they surrendered to the Warriors last season, after winning the previous two editions of the tournament. The previous meeting between the sides this season, in late November at the RDS, ended 8-3 in favour of Leinster. The only Ulster win in the last eight attempts against Saturday's opponents came by 26-10 in the equivalent fixture last April.

Leinster have to pick themselves up after last weekend's shattering extra-time defeat to Toulon in the Champions Cup semi-final, as they desperately seek to retain their grasp on the RaboDirect PRO12 title, that they have held for the last two years. On Friday they travel North to face Irish rivals Ulster, who are two places above them, with a 10 points buffer, following Leinster shock 22-25 loss at Rodney Parade Stadium in the last round against the Newport Gwent Dragons. Defeat for the reigning Champions, could see them eliminated this weekend, if the Ospreys also record a win at the lowly Cardiff Blues. The Dublin based team are faced with a mighty task to keep their hopes alive. Ulster have played nine PRO12 games at heir Belfast home this season, and have won the lot. The last time they suffered defeat at the ground was against Friday's opponents back in April at the end of last season.

Leinster have had the upper hand against their hosts in recent matches, with five successive wins, although last April was the only one that was achieved away from their own RDS ground. In Belfast they have won just twice in their last ten forays north of the Irish border.

A monster game between the Irish Provinces of Ulster and Leinster is scheduled for Ravenhill in Belfast on Friday night. With both sides having suffered Heineken Cup quarter final heartbreak in recent weeks, the RaboDirect Pro12 competition leaves them with their last chance of securing silverware this season. Ulster although currently in fourth position in the table, faces arguably the toughest final two weeks of the season, out of all the contenders for the play-off positions. With an away match against Munster to follow on from Friday’s clash with the current table toppers. If Ulster can maintain their home form, that has seen them lose just once this season on their home soil in the PRO12, and that was way back in their opening fixture, against Glasgow Warriors by 12-13, then they may be able to clinch the five point success that would secure their position in the play-offs for a second successive year.

A similar result in favor of the visitors would see them secure a play-off position for the fifth successive season, since the concept of top four play-offs was introduced to the PRO12 competition. Leinster is one of the few teams that seem to thrive in the bear pit atmosphere of Ravenhill. They have suffered defeat just twice in their last nine visits to the ground, and they have not lost back to back matches at the venue since 1992.

Leinster had a tougher outing, edging Glasgow by just two points in the other semifinal. Jamie Heaslip scored their only try of the game, with Jonathan Sexton adding twelve from the boot. Leinster will feel confident going into this clash- the game is being played at their home ground, where they put Stade Francais to the sword just a week ago to lift the Amlin Challenge Cup. The two sides also met in last season’s Heineken Cup final, with Leinster putting on a dominant display to thrash the men from Belfast 42-14. This will also be a swansong for Isa Nacewa and Jonathan Sexton as they move abroad next season. Sign up today and see Ulster v Leinster Pro 12 final streaming as it happens.
